The Midcoast Symphony Orchestra is a community-based symphony orchestra that originated as a chamber group in 1990. Since its inception, the orchestra has experienced significant growth, both in size and musical scope, evolving into a full-fledged modern symphony orchestra. The orchestra is known for performing a diverse range of orchestral literature that spans from the classical era to contemporary compositions. Located in Maine, the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra holds four regular concerts each season, with performances taking place at two primary venues: the Franco Center in Lewiston and the Orion Performing Arts Center in Topsham. The orchestra serves a wide geographic area, attracting both musicians and audiences from the southern coast of Maine, including Portland and Rockland, as well as inland regions from Augusta to the Lewiston-Auburn area. The musicians of the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra are volunteers who dedicate their time to rehearse and perform together. Under the artistic guidance of Rohan Smith, who has served as Conductor and Music Director since the 2003-2004 season, the orchestra has expanded its capabilities and enhanced its reputation. This growth has allowed the orchestra to attract high-caliber musicians and feature award-winning guest artists in its concerts. The orchestra's operations and performances are supported by contributions from individuals, businesses, and foundations, which have been crucial to its success and sustainability. The orchestra's Board of Directors for the 2023-2024 season includes Tim Kenlan as President, Denise Shannon as Secretary, Carol Preston as Treasurer, along with other dedicated members who play a vital role in its governance. The staff comprises Michael Levine as Executive Director, Ray Libby as Manager, Beth Almquist as Librarian, and John O'Connor handling the Box Office. The Midcoast Symphony Orchestra also engages with the community through initiatives such as the Judith Elser Concerto Competition and by celebrating significant milestones, like their 30th anniversary in 2020. The orchestra maintains a commitment to the safety and well-being of its audience members, adhering to CDC guidelines during performances. Praised by critics, such as Maine Classical Beat, for its dynamic performances, the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra continues to contribute to the cultural landscape of Maine, bringing classical music to life for audiences of all ages.
