David Dzubay’s compositions have been performed in the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and Asia by the symphony orchestras of Aspen, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Detroit, Fort Wayne, Guangxi, Guiyang, Honolulu, Kansas City, Louisville, Memphis, Minnesota, Oregon, Oakland, St. Louis and Vancouver; the American Composers Orchestra, National Symphonies of Ireland and Mexico, New World Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra, and New York Youth Symphony; and ensembles including the Grossman Ensemble, Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Onix, Manhattan and St. Louis Brass Quintets, Voices of Change, the Alexander, Orion and Pacifica string quartets, the League/ISCM, Earplay, and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. His music has been championed by conductors including James DePreist, George Hanson, Keith Lockhart, David Loebel, Michael Morgan, Eiji Oue, Richard Pittman, Iván del Prado, Mark Russell Smith, Lawrence Leighton Smith, Michael Stern, Carl Topilow, David Wiley, Kirk Trevor, Thomas Wilkins, and David Zinman. From 1995 to 1998, he served as composer-consultant to the Minnesota Orchestra and during the 2005-06 season, he was Meet the Composer/American Symphony Orchestra League Music Alive Composer-in-Residence with the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra. Wayne Wallace is professor of practice in jazz studies and jazz trombone at the IU Jacobs School of Music. A seven-time Grammy nominee, he is one of the most respected exponents of African American Latin music in the world today. Wallace is known for his use of traditional forms and styles in combination with contemporary music and has earned wide critical acclaim, including placement in both the trombone and producer categories of the DownBeat Critics Poll. He is an accomplished arranger, educator, and composer with compositions for film and television. He has received grants from the Creative Work Fund, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lila Wallace Foundation, and the San Francisco Arts Commission. Wallace has performed, recorded, and studied with many acknowledged masters of the Afro-Latin and jazz idioms, such as Aretha Franklin, Bobby Hutcherson, Earth Wind and Fire, Pete Escovedo, Santana, and many more. This experience has provided a solid foundation for Wallace’s current explorations of the intersections of a wealth of cultural styles and rhythmic concepts. Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Wallace was exposed to blues, country and western, R&B, jazz, and Afro-Caribbean music at an early age. The fertile musical environment of the San Francisco Bay Area shaped his career. His studies of Afro-Latin music and jazz include trips to Cuba, New York City, and Puerto Rico. Widely respected as a teacher and historian, Wallace has taught at San José State University, Stanford University, and the Jazzschool in Berkeley. He has conducted lectures, workshops and clinics in the Americas and Europe since 1983. As the head of the critically acclaimed Patois Records, Wallace has created a unique record label with a passionate mission of developing and chronicling the multi-lingual styles of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene. Natalie Boeyink, bassist and educator, serves as associate professor of music jazz studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. After earning her doctorate in music education at the Jacobs School in 2015, Boeyink spent eight years as a jazz lecturer and senior lecturer in the University of North Carolina system. She earned an M.M. in Jazz Performance at the University of Louisville and a B.M. in Jazz Studies at Jacobs. Her interest in the educational experiences and careers of jazzwomen has launched a series of research projects, conference presentations and publications, including her dissertation, “An Analysis and Description of Female Jazz Instrumentalists.” An advocate for jazzwomen, Boeyink served as chair of the Jazz Education Network’s Women in Jazz Committee and worked to reestablish the Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Combo Competition. Batuquê Trio is Boeyink’s seasoned collaboration with drummer Andy Smith and pianist Jamaal Baptiste. Focusing on contemporary Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, and Caribbean jazz, the trio frequently appears at jazz festivals as performers and clinicians. Their first CD, Transparency, was released in 2015. A second album is forthcoming in 2024. Jeffery Meyer has captivated audiences throughout North America, Europe, Russia, and Asia with a passion for championing contemporary orchestral music and groundbreaking collaborations. Meyer is professor of music in orchestral conducting at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as well as artistic partner with the Northwest Sinfonietta, one of the Northwest United States’ most dynamic orchestras. Artistic director of the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic for two decades, his work with the orchestra was noted for its breadth and innovation. His programming has been awarded multiple prizes, including three ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming and two Vytautas Marijosius Memorial Awards in Orchestral Programming. Recent projects and upcoming appearances include a newly-developed multimedia performance of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and Petrushka with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong with soprano Dawn Upshaw, a world premiere of Carlos Simon’s Graffiti performed and recorded alongside internationally renowned graffiti artists, a theatrical symphonic concert focused on themes of social justice developed in collaboration with Daniel Bernard Roumain and Marc Bamuthi Joseph, the world premiere recording of Laura Kaminsky’s Piano Concerto with pianist Ursula Oppens, a new semi-staged production of Nkeiru Okoye’s Invitation to a Die-In, nearly one dozen world premieres of new works, and engagements with the Sichuan Symphony, Xalapa Symphony Orchestra, and the Grossman Ensemble. Passionate about working with young musicians and music education, Meyer is an active adjudicator, guest clinician, and master class teacher. Prior to his appointment at the Jacobs School, he led the acclaimed orchestral programs at Arizona State University and Ithaca College. He has given master classes throughout the United States as well as Canada, Europe, and Asia. Meyer holds degrees in piano as well as composition and earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance with Gilbert Kalish at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

American conductor Mélisse Brunet, a native of Paris, France, is quickly gaining attention on both sides of that Atlantic as a “skilled and polished conductor with panache” (ClevelandClassical.com). She is music director of the Lexington Philharmonic (the first woman to hold the position) and of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic. Brunet is one of the five conductors featured in Maggie Contreras’s Tribeca Audience Award-winning documentary Maestra. Last season, she conducted the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Eugene Symphony, West Virginia Symphony, Orchestre National Avignon Provence (France), and University of Illinois orchestra, while promoting Maestra in various festivals. A dynamic advocate of contemporary music, Brunet has collaborated with such composers as Shawn Okpebholo, Mary D. Watkins, T. J. Cole, Steven Stucky, Michael Daugherty, Shulamit Ran, James Barry, Loren Loiacono, and Jennifer Higdon, among others. As an opera and music-theater conductor, Brunet has conducted Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking and Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief, Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, and Verdi’s La Traviata. As a pops conductor, Brunet has programmed concerts for holiday pops, Independence Day, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and other thematic concerts, performing indoors and out for up to 6,000 people. She also conducted orchestras for live movie projections. A respected educator in both France and the United States, Brunet recently served as the first woman director of Orchestral Studies at the University of Iowa-School of Music, where she conducted symphonic concerts, operas, and musical theater. In addition, she headed the orchestral conducting program at the master’s and doctoral levels, from which her students won major positions. Brunet began her studies on the cello, later learning trumpet, horn, and piano. She holds six diplomas from the Paris Conservatory and a professional studies diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the Sorbonne and a doctorate in conducting from the University of Michigan.

Brent Wallarab is David N. Baker Professor of Jazz Studies and associate professor of music in jazz studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Since 1991, he has been lead trombonist with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the jazz orchestra in residence at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. As lead trombonist, he specializes in recreating the entire spectrum of jazz brass styles. In 1992, Wallarab was appointed specialist in jazz for the Smithsonian Institution and serves as transcriber, researcher, editor, and advisor for the Smithsonian’s extensive jazz program. Wallarab has transcribed and edited more than 300 masterworks for jazz orchestra and is considered one of the leading authorities on historical composition for jazz orchestras, such as those of Duke Ellington, Sy Oliver, Fletcher Henderson, and Gil Evans. Wallarab has been instrumental in identifying and cataloguing many pieces from the Ellington archives housed at the Smithsonian Institution.

Tom Walsh is Robert J. Waller Sr. and Robert J. Waller Jr. Professor of Music (saxophone) and chair of the Jazz Studies Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. An active performer of jazz and classical music, he has presented concerts and workshops in South Africa, China, Brazil, Japan, Azerbaijan, Costa Rica, in Europe, and across the United States. He is the co-author of the fifth edition of Creative Jazz Improvisation (2022) with Scott Reeves. His beginning improvisation book Jazz Master Teaches You to Improvise was published by Shanghai Music Publishing House in 2019. Recent recordings include The Pandemic Sessions by the IU jazz faculty, Luke Gillespie’s Moving Mists, Basically Baker, Vol. 2, with the Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra (Patois), and Mike Hackett’s New Point of View (Summit). Premiere performances include Scott Jones’s concert band arrangement of Russell Peck’s The Upward Stream, Chris Rutkowski’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble, and David Baker’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra. His latest solo CD release is Intersections (Arizona University Recordings). Earlier solo CDs include New Life (RIAX) and Shaking the Pumpkin (RIAX). He co-leads the IU Summer Saxophone Academy with Otis Murphy and is co-director of the College Audition Preparation Workshop. Walsh earned degrees in Saxophone Performance and Jazz Studies from Indiana University, where his principal teachers were distinguished classical saxophonist Eugene Rousseau and renowned jazz educator David Baker. Arthur Fagen has been professor of orchestral conducting at the Jacobs School of Music since 2008. Additionally, he has been music director of the Atlanta Opera since 2010. He has conducted opera productions at the world’s most prestigious opera houses and music festivals. From 1998 to 2001, he was invited regularly as guest conductor at the Vienna State Opera, in addition to performances at the Metropolitan Opera, Staatsoper Berlin Deutsche Oper Berlin, Munich State Opera, and many more. On the concert podium, he has appeared with numerous internationally known orchestras. Fagen has an opera repertory of more than 75 works. He has served as principal conductor in Kassel and Brunswick, as chief conductor of the Flanders Opera of Antwerp and Ghent, as music director of the Queens Symphony Orchestra, and as a member of the conducting staff of Lyric Opera of Chicago. From 2002 to 2007, he was music director of the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra and the Dortmund Opera. He and the Dortmund Philharmonic were invited to the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Palais de Beaux Arts in Brussels, and to Salzburg, Beijing, and Shanghai. Fagen conducted a new production of Turandot at the Atlanta Opera in 2007, opening the season and inaugurating the new opera house, the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center. He was a regular guest conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra and guest conducted the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, and many others. He was first-prize winner of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Conductors Competition as well as a prize winner of the Gino Marinuzzi International Conductors’ Competition in Italy. Fagen has recorded for BMG, Bayerischer Rundfunk, SFB, and WDR Cologne. He records regularly for Naxos, for which he has completed the six symphonies of Bohuslav Martinů. His Naxos recording of Martinů’s piano concertos was awarded an Editor’s Choice award in the March 2010 issue of Gramophone magazine.

Now in her twentieth season with the Greenwich Village Orchestra (GVO), conductor and music director Barbara Yahr continues to lead the orchestra to new levels of distinction. The New York native’s career has spanned from the United States to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Previous posts include principal guest conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra, resident staff conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony, and conductor of the Pittsburgh Youth Orchestra. She has appeared as a guest conductor with such orchestras as the Bayerische Rundfunk, Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, Janáček Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Singapore Symphony, and the National Symphony in Washington, D.C., among others. She has also conducted a host of orchestras across the United States. As an opera conductor, she has led new productions in Frankfurt, Giessen, Tulsa, Cincinnati, Minnesota, and at The Mannes School of Music. In recent years, she coached the actors on the set of the Amazon Series Mozart in the Jungle and conducted and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra musicians in a concert to benefit the Musicians of Steel fund. Yahr is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Middlebury College where she studied piano and philosophy. She earned a bachelor’s degree in conducting from the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Max Rudolf, and an master’s degree in music theory from the Manhattan School of Music. She was also a student of Charles Bruck at the Pierre Monteux School. A central focus of Yahr’s career has been her commitment to finding new ways to reach a broader population with music, leading her to pursue an M.A. in Music Therapy at New York University and training at the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy. Her pioneering community music therapy project Together in Music brings orchestral music to the special needs community with uniquely interactive programs presented annually by the GVO.

Multiple Grammy Award-winning conductor JoAnn Falletta serves as music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO), music director laureate of the Virginia Symphony, principal guest conductor of the Brevard Music Center, and conductor laureate of the Hawaii Symphony. Gramophone Magazine named Falletta as one of the 50 great conductors of all time, and ASCAP has honored her as “a leading force for music of our time.” As music director of the BPO, Falletta became the first woman to lead a major American orchestra. She has guest conducted over 100 orchestras in North America and many of the most prominent orchestras in Europe, Asia, and South America. She is a leading recording artist for Naxos and has won two individual Grammys, for Richard Danielpour’s The Passion of Yeshua with the BPO and for Kenneth Fuchs’ Spiritualist with the London Symphony Orchestra. Her Naxos recording of John Corigliano’s Mr. Tambourine Man with the BPO received two Grammys and her Scriabin recording with the BPO was nominated for a 2024 Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance. Falletta is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, has served by presidential appointment as a member of the National Council on the Arts, and is the recipient of many of the most prestigious conducting awards. She has conducted over 1,600 orchestral works by more than 600 composers,including over 135 works by women composers and over 150 premieres. After completing her bachelor’s degree at Mannes, Falletta earned master’s and doctoral degrees from The Juilliard School. When not on the podium, she enjoys playing classical guitar, writing, cycling, and yoga, and is an avid reader.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Alan Bowman played the piano and organ from an early age. He earned a bachelor’s degree in systems analysis with a minor in piano performance from Miami University and a Master of Music degree in Organ Performance from Florida Atlantic University. Bowman lived and worked in Florida for more than 25 years as a director of music in Lutheran, Anglican, and Roman Catholic churches. In 2021, he was introduced to the carillon in Dayton, Ohio, by Larry Weinstein, who gave him his initial lessons and encouragement to study at the Royal Carillon School “Jef Denyn” in Mechelen, Belgium. Under the guidance of his carillon teacher Koen Van Assche, Bowman graduated in June of 2023 and performed a 16-concert tour in Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, and the United States. Earlier this year, Bowman succeeded Weinstein as carilloneur of the Deeds Carillon at Carillon Historical Park in Dayton.

Schola Cantorum: Organ Recital

Named for the Erinyes (“the Furies”) from the Greek tragedy Oresteia by Aeschylus and with roots in Estonia, Lithuania, Greece, the United States and Finland, the Erinys Quartet was founded in 2018 at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where they worked closely with cellist Marko Ylönen. Since fall 2023, Erinys has been the Nina von Maltzahn String Quartet-in-Residence at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. The Erinys Quartet has performed throughout Finland, the rest of Europe, and in the United States. They have been featured at festivals and concert series, including the IU Jacobs School of Music Summer Music Series, Mimir Chamber Music Festival (Fort Worth, Texas), and Festival Groba (Ponteareas, Spain). They have also taken part in the inaugural Dover Quartet Workshop at the Curtis Institute as well as the Professional String Quartet Seminar with the Pacifica Quartet and Atar Arad (Cleveland Quartet) at the Jacobs School. At the 2023 Bad Tölz International String Quartet Competition, they were awarded the Audience Prize Award of the City of Bad Tölz, as well as the Esterházy Foundation Special Prize for best interpretation of a Haydn string quartet. Since 2021, Erinys has been supported by Le Dimore del Quartetto, where they are also a part of the European Union-sponsored MERITA platform. In the 2023-24 season, the Quartet presented concerts around the world, including the United States, Spain, Austria, and Finland. In addition to their studies at Curtis with the Dover Quartet, Erinys is pursuing a diploma in chamber music at Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain, under the tutelage of Günter Pichler (Alban Berg Quartett)

Recognized for its virtuosity, exuberant performance style, and daring repertory choices, the Pacifica Quartet has achieved international recognition over the past 30 years as one of the finest chamber ensembles performing today, establishing itself as the embodiment of the ideal American quartet sound. Named faculty string quartet-in-residence at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2012, Pacifica was previously quartet-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and most recently received its second Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance for Contemporary Voices (2020), featuring the works of three Pulitzer Prize–winning women. In 2017, the Quartet was appointed to lead the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies at the Aspen Music Festival and School. Formed in 1994, the Pacifica Quartet quickly won chamber music’s top competitions, including the 1998 Naumburg Chamber Music Award. In 2002, the ensemble was honored with Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award and the appointment to Lincoln Center’s The Bowers Program, and in 2006 was awarded a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. The Pacifica Quartet has proven itself the preeminent interpreter of string quartet cycles, having given highly acclaimed performances of the complete Carter, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Shostakovich cycles in numerous cities across the United States, in Australia, and in Tokyo and London. An ardent advocate of contemporary music, Pacifica commissions and performs many new works, including compositions by Keeril Makan, Julia Wolfe, and Shulamit Ran. The Quartet has recorded the Carter cycle (Naxos) and the Shostakovich cycle (Cedille Records) to rave reviews. Other recording projects include Leo Ornstein’s piano quintet with Marc-André Hamelin, the Brahms piano quintet with Jacobs Distinguished Professor Menahem Pressler, and the Brahms and Mozart clarinet quintets with Anthony McGill. Summer String Academy – Student Recital

Zoe Kai Wai Lei is a passionate performer known for her impressive technique and imaginative musical programming. Named among the “20 under 30, Class of 2021” by Diapason Magazine for her achievements in organ, carillon, and harpsichord, Lei specializes in twentieth- and twenty-first-century repertoire and is an advocate for new organ and carillon music, frequently premiering commissioned works as well as the East Asian Music and transcriptions featured on her recent dissertation recitals. Lei has performed extensively on both the organ and carillon in her original city of Hong Kong, in Canada, and in the United States, including over 50 carillon recitals on the Lurie and Burton Memorial Towers at the University. A recipient of numerous awards, including second prize at the 2021 American Guild of Organists (AGO) Hong Kong Young Organist Competition and third prize at the 2022 Sursa Organ Competition, Lei received the Rackham International Student Fellowship at the University of Michigan School of Music (U-M) in 2022. She was semifinalist of the 2022 AGO National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance and the cowinner of the AGO Commissioning Project (2021-22). Lei served as organist at Toronto Bloor Street United Church and Toronto Chinese Baptist Church (2017-20), as music director and organist at St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Ypsilanti, Michigan (2021-22), and as assistant organist and carillonist at Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. Lei completed her undergraduate studies at Hong Kong Baptist University in organ and music education in 2017. After studying with organist Kin Yu Wong, she earned a master’s degree in organ performance at the University of Toronto under Kevin Komisaruk. This year, Lei completed her doctoral studies in sacred music (organ performance) at U-M, where she studied organ with Nicole Keller, James Kibbie, and Todd Wilson. Lei has studied carillon with Tiffany Ng and Geert D’hollander and is an associate carillonneur member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America.

Philharmonic Orchestra – Jeffery Meyer, conductor

Kerson Leong has been described as “not just one of Canada’s greatest violinists but one of the greatest violinists, period” (Toronto Star). Forging a unique path since his first-prize win at the International Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition in 2010, he continues to win over colleagues and audiences alike with “a mixture of spontaneity and mastery, elegance, fantasy, intensity that makes his sound recognizable from the first notes” (Le Monde). His latest album release Britten & Bruch, recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Patrick Hahn (Alpha Classics), was awarded Gramophone Editor’s Choice, Choc de Classica, and ‘The Strad Recommends’ by The Strad, as well as five-star recommendations from the Sunday Times and Diapason among others. A sought-after soloist, he was hand-picked by Yannick Nézet-Séguin to be artist-in-residence with the Orchestre Métropolitain during the 2018-19 season and has recently performed as soloist with such ensembles as the Royal, Oslo, Brussels, Kansai, and Liège Royal Philharmonic Orchestras, and the Seattle, Singapore, Toronto, Istanbul, Toledo, Montreal, Stavanger, and Wuppertal symphony orchestras. A sought-after soloist, he was hand-picked by Yannick Nézet-Séguin to be his artist-in-residence with the Orchestre Métropolitain during the 2018-19 season and has performed in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, Wigmore Hall, the Auditorium du Louvre, and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing. A passionate chamber musician, he has performed at such international festivals and concert series as the Verbier, Rheingau Musik, and Gstaad Menuhin festivals, among others. Passionate about pedagogy and music outreach, he has been invited to give master classes and teach at various festivals and universities, including the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and Gustav Mahler Academy, among others. He is an associate artist of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium, where he was mentored by Augustin Dumay. Betsy Burleigh, Thomas R Kasdorf Professor of Choral Conducting and chair of the Choral Conducting Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music since the fall of 2013, served as music director of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh from 2006 to 2015. She led the Mendelssohn Choir in performances of Brahms’ Requiem, Bach’s B-Minor Mass, Rachmaninoff’s Vespers, and Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor and prepared the choir for numerous performances with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO). As a guest conductor, Burleigh has led the PSO, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Akron Symphony, and Canton Symphony. Theater engagements have included music direction at Opera Cleveland and the Cleveland Public Theater. In March 2016, she prepared the Tanglewood Festival Chorus for a performance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and music director Andris Nelsons. Acclaimed for her oratorio conducting, Burleigh’s 2012 Chorus pro Musica performance of Haydn’s Creation was praised in The Boston Globe as an “expansive, poetic reading” and in The Boston Phoenix as “a stirring and elegant, lilting and expansive performance.” Her 2010 rendition of Orff’s Carmina Burana was praised as being both “nuanced” and “hair-raising” by The Boston Musical Intelligencer. She won the 2000 Northern Ohio Live Achievement Award for best classical/opera performance for Ulmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis with the Cleveland Public Theatre and conducted the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus on an Emmy Award–winning concert for the 9/11 Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Summer Music 2024 | Summer Saxophone Academy – Closing Recital

Chih-Yi Chen has been on the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music since 2003 and is the associate chair of the Chamber and Collaborative Music Department. Chen was a recipient of the 2023 Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award. She has also been on the faculty of the Indiana University Summer String Academy for more than two decades. Her versatile qualities as a collaborative partner, chamber musician, soloist and teacher have contributed to a distinguished career, nationally and internationally. Highlights of the 2022-23 season include concerts with violinists Sirena Huang, Richard Lin, Luke Hsu, and Ioana Cristina Goicea, as well as performances and master classes in Taiwan and Argentina. Chen has been performing with International Violin Competition of Indianapolis Laureates since 2003, when she was first invited to perform with Barnabás Kelemen. She has served as an official pianist for the competition since the 9th Quadrennial in 2014 and was awarded special recognition at the 2018 competition for Best Performances of the Beethoven and Mozart sonatas. Her early work with the talented young violinists of the IU Violin Virtuosi, directed by renowned pedagogue Mimi Zweig, led to performances in France, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Japan, and throughout the United States. Among the numerous musicians with whom she has collaborated are violinists Jaime Laredo, Mihaela Martin, Kyoko Takezawa, Sarah Kapustin, Andrés Cárdenes, Pavel Berman, Liviu Prunaru, Augustin Hadelich, Clara-Jumi Kang, and Kerson Leong; violists Atar Arad, Brian Chen, and Masumi Per Rostad; cellists Sharon Robinson, Peter Stumpf, and Bion Tsang; clarinetists James Campbell, Howard Klug, and Gábor Varga; bassoonist William Ludwig; and flutist Thomas Robertello. She has also performed with the Michelangelo, Pacifica, Rubens, and Verona string quartets. Born in Taipei, Chen earned Bachelor, Master, and Doctor of Music degrees from the Jacobs School, where she studied with Lev Vlasenko and Luba Edlina-Dubinsky

Israeli-born violist and composer Atar Arad is professor of music (viola) at the IU Jacobs School of Music. Summer activities include teaching at Keshet Eilon, Domaine Forget, Heifetz Institute, and, the Steans Music Institute. Cum laude first-prize winner at the Geneva International Music Competition (1972), he has performed worldwide in recitals and as a soloist with major orchestras and was a member of the celebrated Cleveland Quartet. Recordings with the quartet and as a soloist for such labels as Teldec, Telarc, RCA, and RIAX are widely acclaimed. His performance of Paganini’s Sonata Per La Grand’ Viola e Orchestra is considered a landmark in the history of the viola. Arad’s compositions include a solo viola sonata, two string quartets, and more. Tikvah for viola solo was commissioned for the 2008 Munich International Viola Competition by ARD. Listen (Three Poems by W. S. Merwin) for tenor, clarinet, viola, cello, and bass was written for the International Musicians Seminar concert tour in England with Mark Padmore. Epitaph for cello and string orchestra was written for Gary Hoffman, who premiered it with the Kremerata Baltica Orchestra. Arad played the viola version at the 2012 International Viola Congress (IVC) and his 12 Caprices for Viola (Hofmeister Musikverlag) on concert tours of the United States, Canada, Israel, England, Germany, France, Spain, and Portugal. Recent performances include the Primrose Memorial Concert at Brigham Young University and a Toronto recital as the Lorand Fenyves Distinguished Visitor. At IVC 2018, he premiered Ceci n’est pas un Bach, a concerto for viola and strings. In June 2019, with Vadim Gluzman and Mark Kosower, he premiered his String Trio, commissioned by the North Shore Chamber Music Festival. He is a recipient of the American Viola Society’s Career Achievement Award (June 2018); the International Viola Society’s Silver Alto Clef 2018 (“in recognition for his outstanding contributions to the to the viola”); and the IU Trustees Teaching Award (2019). Arad plays on a viola by Niccolo Amati and uses PI strings by Thomastik.

Soma Quartet is an award-winning saxophone quartet that was founded at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music under the expert mentorship of Otis Murphy. Soma consists of David Bayard on soprano saxophone, Paul Lorenz on alto saxophone, Sean Bradley on tenor saxophone, and Arthur Liang on baritone saxophone. Soma has garnered notable achievements and accolades, including the Bronze Medal at the esteemed 48th Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, first prize in the emerging ensemble division at the NOLA Chamber Fest Competition, and second place at the MTNA Chamber Music Competition in 2021. Furthermore, Soma has won the grand prize at the prestigious 9th Plowman Chamber Music Competition in 2019. Notable achievements also encompass the third place in the 2020 MTNA Chamber Music Competition, first runner-up position the 2018 Classics Alive Young Artist Competition, and the prestigious first prize in the 2017 Chicago Woodwind Ensemble Competition. Based in Bloomington, Indiana, Soma has been actively engaged in captivating audiences since their inception in the fall of 2016, including recitals at the International Navy Band Symposium, the inaugural American Single Reed Summit, and regional as well as national conferences hosted by the North American Saxophone Alliance. With an unwavering commitment to expanding the saxophone quartet repertoire, Soma has collaborated with composers from the Jacobs School, fostering the creation and performance of new works. While they have a deep passion for traditional repertoire and transcriptions, Soma has also taken great pleasure in conducting numerous outreach concerts in diverse venues, ranging from retirement centers to coffee shops, as well as the Bloomington Transit Center and Monroe County Public Library. These outreach concerts exemplify Soma’s overarching goal of introducing the captivating sounds of the saxophone to a wider and more diverse audience.
