The Schenectady-Saratoga Symphony Orchestra (SSSO) was founded in 1935, with its inaugural concert conducted by Kenneth G. Kelley and sponsored by the Schenectady Chamber of Commerce. Initially known as the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra, it was one of the first American orchestras to be broadcast overseas via short-wave radio. The orchestra comprises both professional and amateur musicians from the local community. Over the years, it has featured renowned soloists such as Percy Grainger, Claude Frank, and Joseph Szigeti. Anthony Stefan became the permanent conductor in 1943, followed by Anthony Pezzano in 1964 and Charles Schneider in 1983. Michael Emery has served as concertmaster since 1980. In 2019, Glen Cortese was appointed Artistic Director. The orchestra performs primarily at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady and was named the Resident Symphony of Proctors. The SSSO offers a concert season that includes four subscription concerts, a holiday show, and a mentoring concert for high school musicians. The organization is a significant cultural asset in New York's Capital District, providing a platform for both local and guest artists.
