The Butler County Symphony Orchestra Association (BCSO) is a distinguished organization dedicated to fostering the musical arts within the Western Pennsylvania community. Established in 1948, the association has a rich history of promoting classical music and supporting local talent. The inaugural board of directors convened on December 15, 1948, marking the beginning of a long-standing cultural institution within the region. Co-sponsored by the Butler Tuesday Musical Club, the Butler Board of Recreation, and the Butler Musical Society, the association's origins are deeply rooted in the community's collaborative spirit. The first president of the association was I.M. Jaffe, who played a pivotal role in its early development. In an effort to generate local interest and secure financial backing, the Butler Orchestral Association organized an invitation rehearsal on February 5, 1950, which was attended by approximately 200 individuals. This event featured musicians from Pittsburgh to ensure a full, balanced orchestra. The BCSO's premiere concert took place on April 17, 1950, under the baton of Edward Roncone, who served as the orchestra's first conductor. This concert also coincided with the opening of Butler County’s Sesquicentennial celebration and was met with great enthusiasm from the audience. Over the years, the organization underwent a name change to the Butler County Symphony Association, reflecting its broader commitment to the symphonic tradition. The association now sponsors six concerts each season, evenly split between three pops and three classical performances. The BCSO has grown in reputation and is now recognized as one of the premier regional professional orchestras in Western Pennsylvania. The Butler County Symphony Orchestra Association remains committed to its educational mission, offering programs such as the Side-by-Side Honors Program, Educational Outreach Concert Series, Orchestra Partnership Program, the 2024 Collegiate Concerto Competition, Tickets for the Taking, and the Young Musicians of Note initiative. These programs aim to nurture young talent and ensure the continued appreciation of orchestral music. In addition to its educational endeavors, the BCSO is actively involved in the community through initiatives like the Maestro Mission and the Free Summer Concert Series, as well as engaging Community Outreach Musicians to bring music to a wider audience. The association is supported by a dedicated Board of Directors & Staff, and it maintains a strong partnership with its sponsors and affiliates. The BCSO also encourages community participation through various support mechanisms, including donations, a dedicated store for merchandise, and volunteer opportunities.
