Virtuous young villager Giselle is seduced by the Duke Albrecht, disguised as a peasant himself, unaware that he is already betrothed. Jealousy leads to the uncovering of Albrecht’s true identity and the revelations drive Giselle to despair and ultimately to her death. Her ghost joins the Wilis, vengeful spirits of betrayed women who haunt the forest and lure men to dance to their deaths. A remorseful Albrecht comes to mourn at her grave and is ensnared by the Wilis’ magic. Only Giselle’s undying love can sustain him as he dances to the dawn.

The stars of tomorrow deliver exhilarating performances highlighting the versatility of the Anna McCowan-Johnson Aspirants. Immerse yourself in an intimate and engaging series of performances delighting fans of classical and contemporary dance alike. From timeless classics to daring new creations, On the Edge will celebrate the artistic legacy of the RWB and André Lewis, O.M. and demonstrate the School’s continued innovation. The performance will include excerpts from the lively and charming classical ballet, Don Quixote, filled with romance, fun, and Spanish flair, as well as an excerpt from Rudi Van Dantzig’s beautifully haunting Four Last Songs. On the Edge will also feature modern creations by RWB School Resident Choreographer Gabriela Rehak, fiery flamenco from RWB School Artistic Faculty Maritel Centurion and a new work from former RWB Company Soloist Yosuke Mino. Meredith Rainey will also create a piece on the Aspirants. He last choreographed a piece for the RWB Company’s Fast Forward, commissioned through Pathways to Performance, a program in partnership with Memoirs of Blacks in Ballet designed to engage Black choreographers in a meaningful way with dance companies. Up-and-coming choreographer from the Anna McCowan-Johnson Aspirant Program, Grace Frazer-Sneddon, will also premiere Quit Clowning Around, a show-stopping solo originally created for the world-renowned Prix de Lausanne Young Creation Award competition.

Dance Spectrum is The RWB School’s year-end showcase that celebrates the hard work of all Recreational Division students ages 4-18 years. Audiences will enjoy all genres of dance including ballet, tap, jazz & more! All performances take place June 1 & 2 at the Manitoba Centennial Concert Hall.

Up and coming dancers in the RWB Professional Division present excerpts of beloved classical favourites and new works that will captivate audiences. Months of intensive training culminate in a show-stopping performance that shines a spotlight on the determination and heart these young artists bring to the art of dance. We will be presenting excerpts and highlights from Petipa’s Raymonda along with brand-new contemporary works from female artists, led by our Resident Choreographer Gabriela Rehak.

A feast for the senses that pairs sensual, powerful choreography with Carl Orff’s masterpiece Carmina Burana cantata. Unbridled passion and highly physical technique express raw emotion that transcends the need for a story. Choreographer Mauricio Wainrot’s artfully-staged vignettes capture the spirit of the titular score’s five movements, oscillating between the erratic, romantic, and lustful as they celebrate community and the joys of life. Featuring Soloists Andrea Lett, Matt Pauls & Nolan Kehler plus the Prairie Voices and Winnipeg Boys Choirs at every performance.

A modern take on the story of Snow White, replete with all well-known characters — the miners, the wicked stepmother, the witch, and of course the prince — with a decidedly more gripping, psychological, creative approach.

From this classic fairy tale inspired by the Brothers’ Grimm, French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj has crafted a visually stunning contemporary ballet. With its aerial scenes, mature narrative and edgy costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier, this show is far from a children’s story.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) School Aspirants will take the On the Edge Tour across Manitoba schools again this year, showcasing a stunning and powerful repertoire for audiences of all ages in performances hosted by schools and communities with repertoire ranging from classical ballet to contemporary and neo-classical.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School’s On the Edge tour has sent dancers on the road to share the power of ballet and other dance forms with new audiences in schools and community spaces for almost 50 years. Pioneered by the RWB in 1945, the famous ‘one-night stand’ model of touring the Prairies in a single 48 passenger bus was adopted by the School in the early 1970s. The touring rig includes lighting and sound equipment and a portable dance floor framed by 20’ black velour legs. It’s all-hands-on-deck as two artistic faculty members, one company/stage manager, and twenty one dancers work together to transform the venue, sometimes a school gymnasium, into something resembling a theatre space in less than one hour. One thing that distinguishes School’s touring program is its impressive visual impact. Just like the Company before it, the School places the dancers front and centre, creating a spectacular performance for all to enjoy.

Fall in love all over again with Shakespeare’s timeless romantic tragedy that remains a masterclass in balletic storytelling. Star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet defy the odds – and their feuding families – in pursuit of their happy ending while navigating the politics and intrigue of Renaissance Italy. Their love becomes their undoing as fate conspires to keep them apart. From innocence to tragedy to redemption, these larger-than-life characters demand remarkable acting that make this production one of the RWB’s crowning achievements. The splendour of sixteenth-century Verona unfolds in Toer van Schayk’s lush sets and costumes, complementing Rudi van Dantzig’s inventive choreography and sword fighting.

Experience the Canadian première of this mature twist on the original Brothers’ Grimm story of Snow White. Step into an enchanted narrative filled with strong, contemporary movement and characters magnificently costumed by Jean Paul Gaultier. The narcissistic, seductive Queen seeks power in her beauty and will stop at nothing to hold on to that influence – even at the expense of her ingenue daughter-in-law Snow White. Set to Gustav Mahler’s symphonies, Snow White’s journey through the stages of her life mirrors the music’s evolution from optimism to depravity and finally to triumph.
