Brian and Elise are long-time members of the Piedmont Opera family and has performed with us many times. That is, until he got cancer. Not just any cancer would do - he went with Multiple Myeloma. After multiple (three) bone marrow transplants and years of being a science experiment, he's in remission- and returned to Piedmont Opera in October of 2023. His incredible journey (we can't believe he's alive- he only had a two percent chance) is a testament to how arts and music help heal.

On October 25 and 27, we begin our historical quest for peace, hope, and courage with Joan of Arc: The Trial at Rouen, an innovative and immersive experience at Centenary United Methodist Church. Pulitzer prize-winning composer Norman Dello Joio revered Joan for her faithfulness and courage, which she displayed in battle, but even more acutely in her trial and execution.

 

Dello Joio spoke of his interest in her story to the New York Times on the occasion of the NBC television broadcast of this opera in 1956: "The timelessness and universality of Joan as a symbol lay in the eternal problem of the individual's struggle to reconcile his personal beliefs with what he is expected to believe. Daily, for ages, she has challenged men to have her courage."​

Piedmont Opera continues its community partnership with a/perture cinema with a screening of 'Joan of Arc' at a/perture cinema. The screening will begin with a short preview discussion by Artistic Director James Allbritten.

The Martha Bassett Show is recorded live at the historic Reeves Theater, in beautiful downtown Elkin, and blends the fabric of the national roots and Americana scene with the rich artistry, history, and flair of North Carolina’s Piedmont region. Helmed by one of the state’s most distinguished musicians, the live show features national artists, fresh local faces, and the music of Martha Bassett. Each show is a collaboration in song and conversation between Martha, her band, and the guests.

Our quest for idealism, courage, and imagination continues with the musical 'The Man of La Mancha.' Obsessed with the chivalrous ideals touted in books, Don Quixote uses his lance and sword to defend the helpless and destroy the wicked. One of the world's most popular musicals and inspired by Miguel de Cervantes' seventeenth-century masterwork Don Quixote, the original 1965 production won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. This show will be at the High Point Theatre on March 23, 25 & 28, 2025. Note: The opening performance is on Sunday, March 23 at 2:00 PM. The performances on March 25 & 28 begin at 7:30 PM.
