The Cecilia Chorus of New York, established in 1906, is a prominent and diverse choral group that has significantly contributed to New York's cultural landscape. With a membership of 150 singers from various backgrounds, the chorus is known for its dynamic and imaginatively curated repertoire that spans five centuries, including standard works, neglected gems, and new commissions. The group performs two major concerts annually at Carnegie Hall, along with a third at a different venue, maintaining a tradition of musical excellence and innovation. Over the years, The Cecilia Chorus of New York has premiered numerous works, including the first-ever Carnegie Hall performances of pieces by composers such as Marianna von Martines and Margaret Bonds, showcasing its commitment to enriching the choral music canon. Under the leadership of Music Director Mark Shapiro since 2011, the chorus has continued to receive acclaim for its performances and has engaged in community outreach, bringing classical music to new audiences. Its history is marked by notable achievements and contributions to the arts, including awards and recognitions such as the Chorus America/ASCAP Alice Parker Award in 2015, reflecting its enduring impact on New York's musical life and beyond.
