This season, the world of music is graced by exceptional performances that celebrate diversity and talent. From the all-women brass group Seraph Brass to the dynamic Wind Ensemble, these events exemplify the power of music to transcend boundaries. Hosted by Mercer University Townsen School of Music and Butler School of Music, these concerts feature award-winning musicians and conductors, showcasing an extraordinary repertoire that includes original transcriptions, newly commissioned works, and classical masterpieces.

Celebrating the Power of Brass and Ensemble: A Journey Through the Jubilee Concert Series and Beyond

Travel through time and imagination in this dynamic program featuring Renaissance dances, bold brass, and a musical masterpiece inspired by visual art.



The evening opens with lively selections from Susato’s The Danserye, followed by the world premiere of The Distant Band by Steven Juliani, performed by the acclaimed Seraph Brass quintet. We close with Mussorgsky’s dramatic Pictures at an Exhibition—a timeless journey through a gallery in sound.

In its 11th season, Seraph Brass was founded by trumpet soloist Mary Elizabeth Bowden with a mission to showcase the excellence of women brass players. Winners of the American Prize in Chamber Music, the group has been praised for its “beautiful sounds" (American Record Guide), "fine playing” (Gramophone), and “staggeringly high caliber of performance” (Textura). Seraph Brass performs a diverse body of repertoire, ranging from original transcriptions to newly commissioned works and core classics. Members of Seraph Brass are passionate about music education and hold teaching positions at the University of North Texas, Shenandoah Conservatory, Texas State University, and Texas Lutheran University.

The final 2022-23 Boise Chamber Music Series concert features Seraph Brass in a quintet with Mary Elizabeth Bowden and Sarah Jessen, trumpets; Chandra Cervantes, horn; Victoria Garcia, trombone; and Cristina Cutts Dougherty, tuba. Boise Chamber Music Series presents Seraph Brass Quintet

Seraph Brass was founded by trumpet soloist Mary Elizabeth Bowden with the mission of elevating and showcasing the excellence of female brass players and highlighting musicians from marginalized groups both in personnel and in programming. Winners of the American Prize in Chamber Music, the group has been praised for their “beautiful sounds” (American Record Guide), “fine playing” (Gramophone), and “staggeringly high caliber of performance” (Textura). Now in its ninth touring season, Seraph primarily performs as a quintet, with a dynamic roster drawing from America’s top brass musicians. The group is currently in residency at the Walton Art Center’s Artosphere Festival, alongside the Dover Quartet. Seraph Brass is a Yamaha Performing Group and performs exclusively on Yamaha instruments.
