The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra - Parkersburg (WVSO-P) is a distinguished cultural institution that has been fostering the appreciation of orchestral music in the Mid-Ohio Valley since its inception. Established in March of 1988, the organization was originally known as the Mid-Ohio Valley Symphony Society (MOVSS). The primary aim of WVSO-P is to serve as a secondary residence for the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (WVSO), thereby extending the reach of high-quality orchestral performances to the broader Mid-Ohio Valley region. The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra is renowned for its professional standards, being a fully unionized orchestra with members selected through nationally competitive auditions. The musicians of the WVSO are highly qualified, with the majority holding advanced degrees in music. They are also active in the wider musical community, performing with other prestigious ensembles such as the Cincinnati Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, and the Cleveland Orchestra. WVSO-P is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors, with Becky Deem McGinnis serving as the Chair, Senta Goudy as the Vice Chair, Priscilla Leavitt as the Recording Secretary, Deborah Amigo as the Corresponding Secretary, and Michael Seely as the Treasurer. The board also includes an Education Chair, Sue Ellen Johnson, and other notable members like Kiki Angelos, Mary Ellen Dearth, Angela Harkness, Amanda Rowe, and Cate Shuman. The mission of WVSO-P is to inspire both public and student participation and to nurture a lifelong appreciation for the art of orchestral music. Through its educational initiatives and concert series, WVSO-P provides enriching experiences and fosters a vibrant cultural environment in the region. The organization offers a variety of educational programs, including Young People's Concerts and WVSO for Kids, aimed at preparing and engaging the younger generation with the world of music. WVSO-P's commitment to its mission is reflected in its diverse offerings, from season tickets and individual concert tickets to educational programs and volunteering opportunities. The organization also provides avenues for community support through donations, gift giving, and involvement in the Symphony League. In the words of Victor Hugo, "Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent." WVSO-P embodies this sentiment by providing the Mid-Ohio Valley with the profound experience of orchestral music, enriching the cultural tapestry of the community for generations to come.
