The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is a renowned professional ensemble with a rich history and a commitment to enhancing lives through the power of music. Founded in 1893, the BSO has become a cultural beacon not only for the South and South West of England but also on a national and international level. Based at the Lighthouse in Poole, the Orchestra maintains residencies in several cities including Bristol, Exeter, Portsmouth, Southampton, and Yeovil. It also performs regularly in other locations such as Truro, Basingstoke, Barnstaple, and Weymouth. As the largest cultural provider in the South West, the BSO serves one of the UK's biggest and most diverse regions. The BSO's busy concert schedule is complemented by its extensive outreach program, BSO Participate, which delivers events in over 200 locations across 23 Local Authority areas. This initiative extends the Orchestra's reach and impact far beyond the concert hall, demonstrating its commitment to making music accessible to all. The Orchestra is known for its wide range of performances, including BSO Digital Concerts, BSO Pops, and special events like "Proms in the Park." The BSO's repertoire is diverse, featuring works from classical composers such as Shostakovich, Bartók, and Prokofiev, as well as engaging with contemporary music and composers. In addition to live performances, the BSO has a strong recording presence, with its latest records featured on some of the biggest classical music labels in the scene. The Orchestra's dedication to recording ensures that its music reaches an even wider audience. The BSO is proud to work with a variety of talented individuals, including conductors, musicians, associate musicians, ensembles, composers, and artists-in-residence. Each season, the Orchestra collaborates with an Artist-in-Residence, providing them with the opportunity to develop a deeper relationship with the musicians and audiences. As a registered charity, the BSO relies on the support of its patrons and the public. It offers various ways for individuals and organizations to support its mission, including membership, philanthropy, corporate partnerships, gifts in wills, and trusts and foundations. The Orchestra also hosts member and supporter events, fostering a community of music lovers who contribute to the BSO's enduring success. The BSO's commitment to being a model of a 21st-century orchestra is evident in its innovative approach to music-making and community engagement.
