Wellesley Symphony Orchestra

Wellesley, MA, United States

The Wellesley Symphony Orchestra (WSO) is a regional orchestra located in Wellesley, Massachusetts, known for its commitment to sharing live music that unites people. The WSO operates under the artistic direction of Music Director/Conductor Mark Latham, who was appointed in June 2022. Established in 1948, the orchestra was originally named the Wellesley Community Orchestra. It was co-founded by Boston Symphony Orchestra violinist Rolland Tapley and Mrs. William Vogler, both residents of Wellesley. Maestro Tapley led the orchestra as its music director and conductor for nearly three decades. During his tenure, the WSO offered three to four concerts each season, which typically included a Pops Concert and a Youth Concert. The performances were held at various venues across Wellesley, Littleton, and Framingham. After Maestro Tapley's retirement in 1973, the baton was passed to several distinguished conductors. Robert J. Prins led the orchestra from 1972 to 1991, followed by Michael Webster in 1992-1993, and then Max Hobart from 1993 until 2021. The WSO has been the orchestra-in-residence at the Massachusetts Bay Community College (MassBay) since 1984, performing at the college's location at 50 Oakland Street in Wellesley, MA. The WSO has a rich history of performances, with a repertoire that includes a wide range of works performed since 1993. The orchestra has also adapted to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, offering distanced performances to continue bringing music to the community during these times. These "Pandemic Performances" and other past performances can be found on the orchestra's YouTube channel. In addition to its concert series, the WSO is actively involved in outreach and educational initiatives. The orchestra supports emerging talent through programs such as the Young Soloist competition, which provides a platform for young musicians to showcase their skills. The Wellesley Symphony Orchestra remains dedicated to its mission of fostering a love for music within the community. It continues to encourage public engagement through various channels, including ticket sales for current seasons, past seasons' highlights, and special merchandise. The WSO also offers opportunities for the public to support its endeavors through sponsorships and donations.
