Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra

Minneapolis, MN, United States

The Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is a distinguished ensemble founded in 1993 by Kevin Ford, who was inspired to create a gay and lesbian orchestra that would foster community and fellowship through the performance of classical music. Despite Ford's untimely passing in 1995 due to complications from HIV-AIDS, his legacy lives on as the MPO continues to thrive and expand its reach. The orchestra embraces musicians from diverse backgrounds and orientations, united by a commitment to inclusivity, non-discrimination, and the celebration of works by underrepresented composers. With a mission to deliver diverse arts entertainment of the highest caliber, the MPO enhances the visibility of the GLBTQA (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Ally) community's musical talents. The organization's vision is multifaceted, aiming to provide its varied membership with opportunities to contribute to the local community through exceptional musical performances. These performances often highlight pieces by underrepresented composers, including GLBTQA artists, women, and people of color. Furthermore, the MPO is dedicated to educating audiences about the significance of the music they perform, affirming the GLBTQA community's artistic prowess, supporting other GLBTQA organizations, and fostering healthy social environments where individuals can express themselves freely and authentically. The MPO is governed by a working Board of Directors, which includes dedicated individuals who volunteer their time and expertise to oversee the organization's growth and mission fulfillment. The board meets monthly, with key committees convening as necessary to address specific organizational needs or special events. The board is composed of executive officers, committee members, and volunteers who contribute to various aspects of the MPO's operations, including executive management, development, finance, governance, marketing, operations, and programming. Artistic leadership is provided by Brian Edward Dowdy, who serves as the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. Dowdy's approach to programming emphasizes music by living composers and those from underrepresented and marginalized groups, alongside traditional classical repertoire. The MPO's concertmaster, Catherine Himmerich, is among the talented musicians who have been featured as soloists in the orchestra's performances. The Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra is a beacon of artistic excellence and social advocacy within the classical music landscape. It continues to engage and inspire audiences with its commitment to inclusivity and the celebration of diversity through the universal language of music.
