Altoona Symphony Orchestra

Altoona, PA, United States

==Altoona Symphony Orchestra== The '''Altoona Symphony Orchestra''' (ASO) is a distinguished musical institution based in Altoona, Pennsylvania, currently celebrating its ninety-fifth season. The orchestra's inception dates back to 1928 when it was founded as the Gerhart String Ensemble by Russell Gerhart, a visionary violinist from Altoona. Gerhart's ambition was to establish a grand symphony orchestra for his community, starting with a small string quartet composed of twenty-four of his students and his wife. The ensemble's early days saw performances at Altoona's Jaffa Mosque, with each member contributing financially to purchase music and rent rehearsal space. Under Gerhart's leadership, the ensemble evolved into a full orchestra, transitioning from a volunteer community group to a professional body of over 65 musicians. The ASO's mission has consistently been to deliver high-quality music to the residents of Central Pennsylvania. It has achieved recognition for its musical diversity, presenting a repertoire that includes both classical and contemporary works, and featuring a mix of talented local artists as well as nationally acclaimed musicians. Russell Gerhart served as the conductor for 23 years, during which he maintained high standards for the orchestra, focusing on quality performances that resonated with audiences. His tenure saw the orchestra's expansion, including inviting guest conductors and soloists. Gerhart's departure from Altoona came in 1951 when he accepted the post of conductor of the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra. He continued his career in conducting and teaching until his death in February 1972 in Huntsville, Alabama. Since its foundation, the ASO has seen more than ten conductors, each contributing to the orchestra's legacy by introducing fresh and innovative sounds to the Altoona region. The orchestra's commitment to its founding mission of providing high-quality music and education to the community has remained steadfast. The ASO performs at the historic Mishler Theatre, a cultural cornerstone of Altoona, Blair County, PA. The theatre, which has been in existence since 1906, has survived a devastating fire and the threat of demolition. It stands as a symbol of the community's dedication to preserving and renovating historic cultural venues. The ASO encourages support for the Mishler Theatre through attendance at performances, volunteering, and donations. The Altoona Symphony Orchestra is located at 1212 12th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601, and can be reached by phone at 1 814-943-2500. The orchestra maintains a presence on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, allowing for greater engagement with the community. The ASO's visual identity is captured through the photography of Harald Dertinger, an ASO board member. As the orchestra enters its 95th season, it continues to uphold the tradition of excellence set by its founder, Russell Gerhart, and remains a vital part of Central Pennsylvania's cultural life. ==External links== * [http://www.mishlertheatre.org/ Mishler Theatre Official Website] * [https://www.facebook.com/AltoonaSymphonyOrchestra/ Altoona Symphony Orchestra on Facebook] * [https://www.instagram.com/altoonasymphonyorchestra/ Altoona Symphony Orchestra on Instagram]
