Opera Essentia is a unique cultural organization with a mission to make opera more accessible to under-reached communities. Based in New York City, Opera Essentia specializes in curating performances of the works of George Frideric Handel, a composer widely regarded as one of the most significant composers for the voice. The organization is known for its innovative approach to opera, staging approachable performances in non-traditional venues such as gardens, parks, and neighborhood gathering centers throughout the city, including areas like Alphabet City, Harlem, and Crown Heights. Opera Essentia's approach to access is distinctive. By bringing opera "outside" in a literal sense, the organization breaks down the barriers of traditional, often exclusive opera venues. Their productions are offered free of charge, challenging the norm of opera as an expensive and exclusive art form. This initiative provides exposure to baroque music to communities that typically have little to no access to such cultural experiences. Inclusion is a cornerstone of Opera Essentia's philosophy. Performances are delivered as concise One Act experiences, making them more digestible to those who may be new to opera. The company is comprised of a diverse group of world-class musicians, who perform neglected works by Handel, including the composer of the famous "Messiah." The impact of Opera Essentia's work is significant. Handel's music is known for its ability to convey character and emotion through expressive vocal writing. By presenting this music performed on authentic gut string instruments, Opera Essentia offers a transformational experience that is intended to be enjoyed by all, regardless of their prior exposure to opera. The artistic team behind Opera Essentia is led by Artistic Director Jeffrey Mandelbaum, with Rod Gomez serving as Project Manager and Co-Director. The organization also benefits from the guidance of Company Advisor Hannah Arie-Gaifman and Executive Producer Marty Jeiven. Heather Bobeck holds the position of Artistic Administrator, while Janet Lees serves as Development Coordinator. Opera Essentia's roster of artists includes talented individuals such as Nicole Besa and Kristin Renee Young, both sopranos; Jeffrey Mandelbaum, a countertenor; Mezzo-Soprano Melisa Bonetti; and bass Hans Tashjian. The instrumental ensemble features Rebecca Pechefsky on harpsichord, Francis Liu and Amelia Sie on violins, Kristina Giles on viola, and Serafim Smigelskiy on cello. The organization's Advisory Council includes Marty Jeiven, Hanna Arie-Gaifman, and Linda Monssen. Opera Essentia also honors the memory of Ann Mandelbaum and Wiebke Moore, who have made significant contributions to the organization. Opera Essentia continues to make a mark on the cultural landscape of New York City by presenting engaging and accessible opera performances, thereby fostering a new appreciation for this historic art form among a broader audience.
