Michael Tilson Thomas, NWS’s Artistic Director Laureate, returns for the season finale of NWS’s 35th Anniversary Season, which features a special collaboration with Miami City Ballet (MCB). For years, MTT and Lourdes Lopez, MCB’s Artistic Director, have led these two cultural pillars of the South Florida community that have earned global recognition for their respective commitments to artistic excellence. This unique collaboration will be an opportunity to showcase both organizations as leaders in classical music, education and dance.

These performances feature NWS and MCB performing works by Stravinsky and Debussy with choreography by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. This collaboration is a continuation of their joint 2020 celebration of Igor Stravinsky and George Balanchine, two icons of the 20th century whose decades-long friendship proved to be one of the most prolific artistic pairings of their time. Blending music and movement, the two cultural giants gave the world unforgettable productions and inspired students Michael Tilson Thomas and Lourdes Lopez, who now embolden the next generation of artists in our community.

George Balanchine’s elegant and animated Jewels (1967) has been dazzling audiences ever since it premiered more than 50 years ago. A beloved favorite in the Balanchine canon, Jewels is a triptych of dances evoking French (“Emeralds”), American (“Rubies”), and Russian (“Diamonds”) ballet traditions, inspired by the choreographer’s visit to the jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels. Miami City Ballet is famed for its dedication to Balanchine’s repertory, style, and technique, and returns for the first time in more than a decade to perform his seminal ballet, danced to music by Fauré, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky. “Bold, light, immediate, intensely musical, the dancing of Miami City Ballet flies straight to the heart” (The New York Times).

"Walpurgisnacht Ballet" brings to the stage a vibrant display of female virtuosity, originally created for the opera "Faust," showcasing two dozen women in a mesmerizing performance. "La Valse" captures the romance and dark mystery of a disintegrating waltz, featuring over 30 dancers and set to Ravel's haunting score. Completing the trio, Pam Tanowitz's world premiere promises a fresh and unpredictable approach to dance, pushing the boundaries of the art form.

The Spring Mix features two company premieres alongside a Jerome Robbins classic, creating a dynamic showcase that ranges from raucous and robust to solemn and soulful. Robbins' "Glass Pieces," set to the electrifying rhythms of Philip Glass's music, captures the pulse of metropolitan life through a postmodern and classical mashup. The program also honors the legacy of José Limón with "Chaconne," a solo that beautifully balances the power of control and the freedom of expression, set to an emotion-laden J.S. Bach work for violin.

Completing the triple bill is the company premiere of Alexei Ratmansky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." With ten dancers exploring the full range of motion and emotion, this abstract ballet is danced to Modest Mussorgsky's famed score, against the backdrop of Wassily Kandinsky's "Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles." The performance is a feast for the senses, with dancers adorned in designs by Adeline Andre.
