Los Angeles Jewish Symphony

Los Angeles, CA, United States

The Los Angeles Jewish Symphony (LAJS) is a distinguished orchestra founded in 1994 by Dr. Noreen Green, who serves as its Artistic Director and Conductor. Under her leadership, the LAJS has become known for its performances that blend music with Jewish themes, offering a unique cultural experience to audiences in Southern California and beyond. Dr. Green, an esteemed conductor, educator, and lecturer, has earned international recognition for her expertise in presenting Jewish-themed music, having conducted and lectured in various countries including the United States, Israel, Spain, South Africa, Australia, Canada, and the Caribbean. The LAJS has graced numerous prestigious venues across the Southland, such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Ford Theatres, and UCLA’s Royce Hall. The symphony is dedicated to community engagement, hosting free family-oriented events like KlezFest and educational outreach programs such as "A Patchwork of Cultures: Exploring the Sephardic-Latino Connection," which introduces Los Angeles County grade-school students to the rich tapestry of Jewish music. The symphony's repertoire not only reflects the historical and cultural Jewish experience but also resonates with contemporary themes and issues. This inclusive approach has led to collaborations with a variety of artists and groups, including the Faithful Central Bible Church Choir, the Agape International Choir, and the Mariachi Divas. The LAJS is also committed to showcasing emerging talent and has commissioned new works, often premiering them in their concerts. The LAJS's mission is multifaceted: to perform works by Jewish composers, both renowned and lesser-known; to create opportunities for new compositions by Jewish artists; to act as a resource for musicians; to serve as an educational medium for Jewish music and composers; and to provide educational opportunities for children of diverse backgrounds. The symphony's vision is to bridge diverse communities and create harmony through music that reflects the Jewish experience, ensuring that this cultural heritage is passed down to future generations. The LAJS is supported by a dedicated team and board, including prominent figures such as David Gill, Chair of the Board, and S. Ian Drew, M.D., President. The organization also benefits from the generosity of sponsors, government grantors, corporate sponsors, and foundations, which enable the continuation and expansion of its programming. In addition to its regular season, the LAJS has been involved in significant events, such as the United Nations panel "Music and the Holocaust: History, Memory and Justice," where Dr. Noreen Green participated alongside other experts to discuss the role of music in Holocaust commemoration and education. With a history spanning over two decades, the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony remains a beacon of cultural enrichment, celebrating the vibrancy of Jewish music and fostering understanding and unity through its performances and outreach efforts.
