Henley-on-Thames, United Kingdom
Henley Symphony Orchestra (HSO) is a prominent musical ensemble based in Henley-on-Thames, a charming town known for its rich cultural heritage. Established with a passion for symphonic music, the orchestra has become a significant part of the town's artistic community, contributing to its vibrant cultural scene. Under the stable musical direction of Ian Brown for 27 years, HSO flourished and expanded its repertoire. Following Brown's retirement in 2022, the orchestra has been inviting applications for a new principal conductor and music director. In the interim, HSO has benefited from the diversity and different conducting techniques of various guest conductors. David Burton, an accomplished violinist, has been the orchestra leader since 1992, with a brief sabbatical before rejoining in 2006. Burton's musical education includes studying at the Royal College of Music and the National Centre for Orchestral Studies, followed by professional engagements with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and Icelandic Opera. In addition to leading HSO, he maintains a busy teaching career and performs with the Hammig String Quartet and other prestigious ensembles. The Henley Symphony Orchestra has a rich history of performing a wide range of works, from the standard symphonic repertoire to contemporary music, including commissioned pieces. The orchestra has tackled ambitious works such as Bruckner's 7th Symphony, Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony, and Strauss's "Alpine" Symphony. HSO has also accompanied many distinguished soloists, such as György Pauk, Isabelle van Keulen, and Steven Isserlis, and has supported outstanding young artists at the start of their careers. HSO's performances extend beyond Henley-on-Thames, with the orchestra having visited Henley's twin towns in Europe. These tours include performances in Falaise, Normandy; Leichlingen, Germany; and Bled, Slovenia, where they participated in the Bled International Music Festival. The orchestra's community engagement includes local outreach projects, such as the SHOUT performance for the Henley Festival Trust and a Christmas concert for pre-school children. Notably, HSO took part in the Cultural Olympiad for London 2012 with the performance of "Making Music Overture" by Orlando Gough. The Henley Symphony Orchestra is a registered charity (no. 271849) and continues to invite audiences to experience their performances. Ticket information and contact details are available through the HSO Box Office and their official website. The orchestra maintains an active presence on social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, allowing followers to stay updated on upcoming concerts and events. HSO's commitment to musical excellence and community engagement has solidified its reputation as a cherished institution within Henley-on-Thames and the broader musical landscape.
