Solent Concert Orchestra

Southampton, United Kingdom

== Solent Concert Orchestra == The Solent Concert Orchestra is an amateur ensemble based in the Southampton, Solent, Hampshire, and New Forest area, dedicated to the performance of classical music. The orchestra's mission is to provide enjoyment and musical development for its members, to encourage new musicians to join and enhance their musical skills, and to deliver musical pleasure to its audiences. The orchestra's repertoire is diverse, ranging from classical masterpieces to light modern works, including symphonies and concertos. === History === The origins of the Solent Concert Orchestra can be traced back to the Marchwood Orchestra, which was established in 1989. Initially, the group performed at St John’s Church in Marchwood and quickly became known for its enthusiastic and community-focused approach to music. The first concert featured solo and ensemble pieces conducted by Reg Martin, marking the beginning of a journey of growth and evolution for the ensemble. Over the years, the orchestra experienced significant growth and underwent several changes in leadership, with conductors such as Peter Robson, Tony Kitcherside, Alex Pope, and Simon Wilkins, who has been leading since 2013. The orchestra expanded its performance venues to include a variety of settings across Hampshire, such as churches, schools, village halls, and local fetes, and has been a contributor to both local and national charities. In 2009, the Marchwood Orchestra launched an ambitious initiative to create a second orchestra, Marchwood Prelude, aimed at nurturing less experienced musicians of all ages. Under the direction of John Bell, Marchwood Prelude flourished, initially performing alongside the main orchestra and eventually hosting its own successful concerts. By 2014, the organization rebranded as Marchwood Orchestras to better represent the two ensembles operating under its umbrella: Marchwood Orchestra and Marchwood Prelude. This structure remained until 2017 when the two orchestras became distinct entities. In 2018, to reflect its expanded programme and wider geographical reach, Marchwood Orchestra was rechristened as the Solent Concert Orchestra. === Rehearsals and Performances === The Solent Concert Orchestra rehearses on Thursday evenings at Bramshaw Village Hall in Lyndhurst, providing a regular opportunity for members to practice and prepare for their concerts. Annually, the orchestra performs three to four concerts, showcasing a wide range of musical styles to cater to diverse audiences. The next scheduled concert for the Solent Concert Orchestra is on 15 June 2024, promising to be another opportunity for the ensemble to share its passion for music with the community. === Joining the Orchestra === The Solent Concert Orchestra is open to new members and holds vacancies for various positions within the ensemble. Information for prospective members is available, ensuring that musicians interested in joining can find all the necessary details to become a part of this vibrant musical community. === Charitable Giving === In line with its community spirit, the Solent Concert Orchestra remains committed to charitable giving, using its musical talents to support causes and contribute positively to society.
