The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater

Syracuse favorite Jon Nakamatsu returns to the stage to perform the colossal Piano Concerto No. 2 by Brahms, who described the 4-movement work as a “very small piano concerto.” The Syracuse Orchestra will be joined in the first half of the concert by the Youth Orchestra for Kenji Bunch’s Groovebox Fantasy, a tribute to producer/musician Quincy Jones. Mendelssohn’s “Scottish Symphony” was inspired by his first trip to Britain and rounds out the first half of the concert.

This intimate afternoon concert of Bartok and Mozart features the string and wind sections of The Syracuse Orchestra separately. Bartok wrote his Divertimento for String Orchestra in just 15 days, and it was the last piece he wrote before he fled Hungary during World War II. The Gran Partita will feature 13 winds and was composed at the height of Mozart’s popularity. Pair this with the April 26 Mozart Masterworks concert for even more music by the great composer

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 begins famously with “fate knocking at the door.” Experience this beloved work, and further explore the topic of fate in music with Carlos Simon’s Fate Now Conquers. The Syracuse Orchestra will feature principal oboist, Eduardo Sepúlveda, performing R. Strauss’s gorgeous Oboe Concerto. The evening includes a world-premiere by one of our favorite composers, Polina Nazaykinskaya.

The Syracuse Orchesta’s brass section is highlighted in this afternoon concert! Discover the fun “Surprise” for yourself in Haydn’s Symphony No. 94, then compare the Haydn with Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony which he wrote as a modern interpretation of the classical styles of Mozart and Haydn.

Explore the musical connections between composers. Subito Con Forza by Unsuk Chin is a tribute to Beethoven written in honor of his 250th birthday. This work will follow Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture. Schumann and Brahms were tied together personally and professionally. Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 was written in 1841, then greatly revised and published in 1851. In 1891, however, Brahms, who much preferred the first version, published it against the wishes of Schumann’s wife, Clara. One of Brahms’s most beloved choral works, Schicksalslied, will be performed with the Syracuse University Oratorio Society

Sought-after violinist Will Hagen returns to play Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D Major, the first non-film music he wrote after the defeat of Hitler in World War II. The rest of the program highlights pieces written by film composers and music made famous on the big screen, including the opening fanfare of Also sprach Zarathustra from “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Pianist Natasha Paremski returns to perform Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. This is the only Rachmaninoff work for piano which Natasha has yet to perform with The Syracuse Orchestra. The show opens with Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture and concludes with Respighi’s famous Pines of Rome.

Violinist Rachel Barton Pine leads the orchestra in the second half for Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.  In a special appearance, Ms. Pine’s daughter Silvia Pine will also join to perform Vivaldi’s Double Violin Concerto in A minor.  The show opens with Missy Mazzoli’s atmospheric Orbiting Spheres and Brahms’s Symphony No. 3, the only remaining Brahms symphony yet to be conducted by music director Lawrence Loh.

The highlight of the night is the collaboration with the Syracuse University Oratorio Society, as we present Carl Orff’s iconic masterpiece, Carmina Burana, known for its epic and movie-famous opening, O Fortuna.

Hannah White returns to perform Mozart’s Straussburg with Symphoria. At age nine, Hannah began performing with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and she has traveled the globe dazzling audiences ever since. The concert begins with music composed by Jessie Montgomery, and Schumann’s Spring Symphony rounds out the afternoon.

Dr. Henry Panion returns to the podium at the Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theatre to lead the Symphoria Orchestra in “A Gospel Symphony Celebration” with some of Syracuse’s most recognized Gospel singers and a 75-member community Gospel Choir assembled by Syracuse gospel music maven, Cora Thomas.

We begin with Bernstein’s Candide Overture, a buoyant and lively curtain-raiser, and close the show with symphonic dances from West Side Story. 2019 National Sphinx Competition winner Sterling Elliott plays Schumann’s Concerto for Cello.

Symphoria is hosting its 2023 Community Side By Side Concert on Sunday October 8th at 7pm.  Principal Pops Conductor Sean O’Loughlin will lead the performance, and the event will be held at Crouse Hinds Theater in downtown Syracuse.

Symphoria Loves Country brings to life the classic hits of Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash, as well as songs by the biggest artists of today, like Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, The Chicks, and Kacey Musgraves. Join local country artist, Steven Cali, for a special pre-concert spotlight performance in the lobby beginning at 6:30 pm.

Symphoria has made special arrangements for pre-paid parking at the Equitable Towers Parking Garage, just steps away from the Crouse-Hinds Theater, conveniently located across Montgomery Street (entrance is directly across from the War Memorial). To purchase pre-paid concert parking, simply click the “Buy Now” button and select “September, 30, 2023 PARKING.”   To enhance your confidence at being downtown, Symphoria ambassadors will be stationed between Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater and the garage entrance on Montgomery Street before and after concerts.

Try your luck at the raffle baskets and silent auction with all proceeds benefitting the orchestra. Food tickets are no longer available, but event tickets without food may still be purchased. You are welcome to bring your own picnic. There will be a cash bar at the event.

Join the Symphoria String Quartet, presented by the Cazenovia Land Preserve, in a beautiful summer setting at Stone Quarry Art Park. There is assistance available from the parking area to the seating area, and accessible restrooms are also available. The picnic area opens at 5:30 pm, and the concert begins at 7:00 pm

Do you need be uplifted, inspired, and excited? Then join Music Director Lawrence Loh and the 300 musicians who will take the stage to perform the epic Symphony No. 2 by Gustav Mahler. It’s a concert you don’t want to miss. Symphoria performs with Syracuse University choirs: Oratorio Society, Crouse Chorale, Hendricks Chapel Choir, Setnor Sonority, and the Syracuse University Singers.

Enjoy an afternoon of Latin American music, highlighted by the Guitar Concerto of Mexican composer Ponce featuring local favorite Kenneth Meyer. Music by Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón, Chilean composer Enrique Soro, and Argentinian composer Piazolla rounds out the concert. The dance and folk-inspired themes of these pieces will move and inspire you. This performance is a companion to the New World Symphony and More concert on February 15.

A tribute to the ultimate “Queen of Soul,” this program features symphony-favorite Capathia Jenkins and three-time Grammy Award nominee Ryan Shaw performing iconic hits like Respect, Think, A Natural Woman, Chain of Fools, Amazing Grace, and many others. Come ready to sing and dance at this soul-filled concert.

Aretha: A Tribute

Sara Davis Buechner returns to the stage to perform the Liszt Piano Concerto No. 1, which Liszt composed over the course of 26 years. The season concludes with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, often referred to as “The Titan.” Mahler’s first symphony was often thought to be his favorite, as he conducted it more than any other of his symphonies.
