Champlain Philharmonic

The Champlain Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) is a community-based full orchestra established in 2004 to enhance the arts scene in Addison County. The orchestra was founded by two Vermont Symphony Orchestra string players, violinist David Gusakov and cellist Dieuwke Davydov, who sought to invite the community to participate in a new musical endeavor. They held auditions and selected over 55 qualified musicians, encompassing string, wind, and brass players, to form the orchestra. The group began rehearsals at the Vergennes Opera House, leading to their debut performance on November 15, 2004, at the Middlebury College Center for the Arts. This inaugural concert featured acclaimed pianist Diana Fanning performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 3 and was met with excellent reviews and a sold-out audience. Over the years, the CPO has established a tradition of performing a series of spring and fall concerts, contributing to its growth and success. In 2010, under the direction of Paul Gambill, the orchestra expanded its repertoire and outreach by presenting professional soloists, premiering new compositions, and engaging in collaborations with youth and schools. Notably, the orchestra has performed with the Middlebury Community Chorus, showcased works by local composers such as Peter Hamlin and C. Robert Wigness, and hosted competitions for high school students. The Champlain Philharmonic Orchestra has made the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury its home, where it regularly performs, extending its reach to Rutland County as well. The orchestra has worked with more than a dozen guest soloists and guest conductors, including Troy Peters, Larry Hamberlin, and Dr. Yutaka Kono. In 2017, Matthew LaRocca took on the role of Music Director, continuing the CPO's tradition of musical excellence and community engagement. The CPO remains committed to its mission of enriching the local cultural landscape through high-quality orchestral performances and educational initiatives, while still maintaining its strong community roots.
