The orchestra was founded in 1962 by Ruth T. Brooks and has since become an integral part of the town's cultural life. ===History=== The HSO began its journey over six decades ago with the mission to rehearse and perform great music, bringing together an all-volunteer group of musicians. Over the years, the orchestra has grown to include more than 70 members from the Greater New Haven area and beyond, all sharing a passion for music. From 1969 to 2007, the orchestra was led by Maestro Paul Gacek, whose tenure saw the HSO flourish. In recognition of his distinguished leadership and continued support, Gacek was named Conductor Laureate in 2017. In 2008, Vesna Mehinovic took up the baton as the Music Director, under whose guidance the orchestra has continued to expand its repertoire and innovate its concert programs. ===Mission and Contributions=== The HSO is committed to cultural service and educational outreach. One of its cornerstone initiatives is the Young Musicians Concerto Competition (YMCC), which has been fostering the musical development of local students for over 53 years. This annual competition offers young musicians the chance to perform as soloists with the full orchestra. Winners are featured at the HSO's spring concert, highlighting the organization's dedication to nurturing young talent. Additionally, the HSO presents the Ruth T. Brooks Scholarship Award to a deserving graduating senior from Hamden High School who has demonstrated excellence in musical studies.
