Sounds of nature meet music of love: a festive Wagner evening featuring the glorious Good Friday Music from Parsifal and the second act of Tristan und Isolde. This Second Act is itself an opera within an opera: a never-ending love duet, performed here by a dream couple of Wagnerian singing, Jonas Kaufmann and Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund. And if you’ve always wondered why Wagner's music never seems to come to an end, it is clear from this love duet. Its enormous length allows the composer to explore the feeling of love like a landscape. The fact that Wagner's characters are heroes heightens our awareness of the armor they have to cast off.

With its numerous stages, its very eager audience and generous institutions (such as the Royal Philharmonic Society), London has always been a magnet for artists. Hosted by Khatia Buniatishvili (with Tchaikovsky), Jaap van Zweden and the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, this evening is a magnificent showcase for the city. The Seventh Symphony was Dvořák's first commissioned work. Premiered to thunderous applause on April 22, 1885 at St. James's Hall, it raised the delicate question for the Czech composer of where to draw the line between his natural inclination to let his heart and Moravian roots speak for themselves and the (new for him) need to appeal to an audience accustomed to the codes of “Western” Romanticism, embodied in particular by his mentor Johannes Brahms. With his characteristic talent and generosity, the great Antonin got it absolutely right... first time around!

Hôtes réguliers de la manifestation, ils sont des candidats tout désignés pour embrasser l'extrême diversité de la scène musicale londonienne à travers les siècles et présentent ainsi un florilège de «tubes» de tous âges, de l'inoxydable Mozart aux non moins immortels Beatles.

Vassilis Varvaresos est un pianiste déjà solidement assis dans la carrière. Son premier prix en 1998 lors des YCA International Auditions l'a lancé aux Etats-Unis, lui permettant de se produire à la Maison Blanche pour le président Barack Obama. Titulaire d'un doctorat de la Juilliard School et d'un diplôme d'artiste-interprète du Conservatoire de Paris (où il a été l'étudiant de Michel Dalberto), cet artiste aux multiples facettes a également composé la musique de dix films et de plusieurs séries télévisées, écrit un livre et sorti chez Aparthé un disque très original baptisé «V for Valse».

Kim – «or» en français – est un patronyme porté par près de 22% des gens en Corée. Mais Bomsori n'en est pas moins unique… et tout à fait à la hauteur de son nom! Née à Séoul en 1989, formée à la Juilliard School, cette lauréate des concours Tchaïkovski de Moscou, ARD de Munich, Reine Elisabeth de Bruxelles et Sibelius de Helsinki (excusez du peu!) s'est déjà produite sur les scènes du Musikverein de Vienne, de la Philharmonie de Berlin et du Carnegie Hall de New York. Elle joue un magnifique Guadagnini construit en 1774, mis à sa disposition par la Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation.

«Spring Sonata» – Bomsori Kim – Menuhin's Heritage Artist I

«When I'm 64»: Nigel Kennedy ne pouvait trouver titre plus approprié à sa tournée estivale 2021, lui qui a vu le jour à Brighton le 28 décembre 1956, il y a de cela… soixante-quatre ans! Joli paradoxe: il s'agit de l'une des premières chansons écrites par Paul McCartney, sur le piano familial du 20 Forthlin Road alors que le Beatle n'avait que quinze ou seize ans; il expliquera plus tard qu'en plus de la sonorité «claquante» du mot «sixty-four», il avait voulu offrir à travers elle… un prélude à la retraite à son père! Kennedy, dont on ne saurait oublier tout ce qu'il doit à Yehudi Menuhin, vient ici en «ami de la famille»: cordes sèches ou électrifiées, on ne compte plus les concerts de «légende» qu'il a inscrit en lettres d'or dans la mémoire du Festival. «When I'm 64» – Nigel Kennedy & Band

Née en 2007 dans une famille de musiciens, Alexandra Dovgan fait tout plus rapidement que les autres, sans porter pour autant les «stigmates» de l'enfant prodige. Grigory Sokolov, qui l'a pris sous son aile, le résume très bien: «Si son jeu est bel et bien exceptionnel, rien dans sa musique ne permet de déceler que c’est une enfant qui joue, ce que l’on entend est l’interprétation d’une musicienne déjà adulte.» Formée depuis l'âge de cinq ans par l'excellente pédagogue Mira Marchenko à l'Ecole centrale de musique de Moscou, elle a été révélée en remportant en 2018 le grand prix du Concours pour jeunes créé par Denis Matsuev. On a pu l'entendre depuis sur la grande scène du Concertgebouw d'Amsterdam, au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées à Paris et au Festival de Salzbourg.

“Waldszenen” – Alexandra Dovgan

Voilà vingt ans que James O'Donnell exerce la charge d'«Organist and Master of the Choristers» – entendez: de directeur de la musique – sous les voûtes de l'une des plus prestigieuses églises d'Angleterre: Westminster Abbey. Deux ans après le titulaire de Notre-Dame de Paris, Olivier Latry, il est convié à la tribune de l'église Saint-Maurice de Saanen pour y faire résonner les plus belles pages de son répertoire, en harmonie bien sûr avec la thématique de l'été. C'est ainsi que l'on se délectera à l'écoute de pages pour orgue des grands maîtres anglais, de Purcell à Vaughan Williams. Une «tradition» serait-elle en train de naître?

Everyone is familiar with the soaring theme of Jane Campion's “The Piano”, or the almost equally characteristic features of Peter Greenaway's film soundtracks, of which he is, so to speak, the “regular” composer; Michael Nyman is not so readily associated with so-called “pure” music, yet his catalogue is equally impressive in this respect. In a promising dialogue with Mozart, Sebastian Knauer reminds us of this, with that touch of originality which is typical of most of his projects – such as the latest one, postponed because of the pandemic: “Ludwig Fun Beethoven”... which speaks for itself!

It was already a well-known fact that Siberia was a hotbed of violinists – think of all the disciples of Zakhar Bron, starting with Vengerov and Repin! – it is obviously also a breeding gro and for pianists. The young Roman Borisov is a fine example of this. Born in 2002 in Novosibirsk, he has already excelled in a dozen or so competitions and today benefits from prestigious support, including that of the Vladimir Spivakov Foundation and pianist Denis Matsuev.

God save the King… and God save Handel, the most English of German composers! Having studied in Italy (resulting in a Master's degree not only in Opera Seria but also in Oratorio), the Hanoverian, an exact contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, crossed the English Channel in 1711 and immediately felt at home there. In addition to the brilliant and very brassy “Coronation Anthems” (of which football fans know the most famous of the four, “Zadock the Priest”, by heart), Hervé Niquet and his Concert Spirituel are offering the audience another magnificent work by Handel: a “Te Deum” composed in 1743 to celebrate the victory of the British and Hanoverians (!) over the French at the battle of Dettingen in Bavaria during the War of the Austrian Succession. A great show of humility from the French musicians!

God Save the King! – Hervé Niquet & Le Concert Spirituel

Together with the same fellow musicians as in the opening concert, Daniel Hope ends his carte blanche by inviting the acclaimed baritone Thomas Hampson to highlight another iconic facet of English music: his proud affection for popular traditions embodied by the immense repertoire of folksongs, whose kaleidoscope of emotions and colours has touched the hearts not only of islanders but also of continental Europeans, such as Haydn and Beethoven, who produced beautiful pieces in English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish tones.

Ils sont quatorze chaque année, pour toute l'Angleterre, à pousser la porte du prestigieux King’s College de Cambridge. Parmi ces élus figurent à la fin des années 1960 les six choral scholars à l’origine des King’s Singers. Six étudiants, six amis, immergés en permanence dans la pratique individuelle et commune du chant, et qui un beau matin décident de mettre leurs capacités au service d’un répertoire plus… «fun»: celui de leurs loisirs, de leur âge, de leur époque. Depuis, le groupe a bien sûr évolué, mais la recette reste la même et le succès est intact; plus de 150 albums documentent leur immense répertoire. Après «Horizon» en 2012, «Black Humor» en 2015 et «Gold Standards» en 2018 (pour célébrer leur demi-siècle de scène), ils sont de retour à Saanen avec un programme à leur image: multicolore. Littéralement incontournables en cet été 100% british!

Royal Blood – The King's Singers

Founded in Leipzig in 1992 by five singers from the famous Thomanerchor, amarcord – a name that means “I remember” in the Emilia-Romagna dialect – is part of this new generation of a cappella choirs that has no qualms about breaking down barriers between genres and eras. Together with Daniel Hope's violin and Simon Crawford-Phillips' piano, they plan to take the audience on a journey through half a millennium of creation, from Thomas Tallis to Benjamin Britten.

Es braucht keine Worte, um Bilder in den Köpfen der Zuhörer entstehen zu lassen: Noten rei- chen vollkommen ... vorausgesetzt natürlich, sie sind klug gesetzt! Wenn es um die Inspiration unserer Vorstellungskraft geht, können wir uns ganz auf Paul Lewis verlassen, der nicht nur die charakteristischen Linien von Mussorgskys äusserst anschaulichen «Bildern einer Ausstel- lung» nachzeichnet, sondern auch mit «abstrakteren» Stücken wie den Sonaten von Haydn oder Schubert unsere Fantasie anzuregen vermag. Der Brite, dem als Sohn eines Liverpooler Hafenarbeiters die musikalische Karriere wahrlich nicht in die Wiege gelegt wurde, ist ein Künstler durch und durch. Nachdem ihm seine fulminante Gesamteinspielung von Beethovens 32 Sonaten bei harmonia mundi zu internationalem Ruhm verholfen hatte, trat er 2015 die Nachfolge von Fanny Waterman an und ist seither Co-Direktor der renommierten Leeds International Piano Competition.
