The Southern Crescent Chorale’s sixteenth Spivey Hall appearance features magnificent choral music composed or arranged by Dan Forrest. An acclaimed composer, Forrest’s music has become well-established in the repertoire of choirs universally. Accompanied by a small orchestra, and Spivey Hall’s magnificent Albert Schweitzer Memorial Organ, the Chorale will transport you with glorious music. “Requiem for the Living”, the centerpiece of this concert, is a “transcendent prayer for peace and rest, based on the liturgical Requiem texts but also interspersing other texts. From the opening Introit-Kyrie to the aggressive Vanitas Vanitatum, the heavenly Agnus Dei, ethereal Sanctus, and a deeply peaceful Lux Aeterna, this work has had a powerful impact on choirs and audiences around the world.”(danforrest.com) Refreshing folk and hymn arrangements by Forrest, as well as piano and organ solos, will round out this extraordinary afternoon of great music.

From the Steppes to the Caucasus to the Crimean, the Balalaika Fantasie brings you music from the heart of Eurasia. This unique ensemble performs on various sizes of balalaikas, a three stringed triangular shaped instrument, as well as and the round-bodied three-stringed domra.  They add spice to the show with the zhaleika, an ancient reed instrument similar to a New Year’s Eve party horn; an assortment of authentic percussion, such as spoons, clackers, and tambourines; and the accordion. The ensemble recreates a sense of old world history and the spirited excitement of Eurasian folk melodies and rhythms.

Georgia Musicale Group was incorporated in 2016 as a non-profit organization with a few music lovers. In the last several years, our group has experienced rapid growth with more than one hundred performers including pianists, various instrumentalists, and vocalists. Members come from diverse backgrounds such as scientists, medical doctors, lawyers, financial advisors, teachers, professional musicians. Many of them played instruments when they were younger but stopped playing due to their careers. However, their love of music remained, and they discovered GMG as a vehicle to resume their love of music.

This season she will make her Spivey Hall debut.

Since their formation in 1994, the Tetzlaff Quartet, comprised of brother and sister Christian and Tanja Tetzlaff, Hanna Weinmeister, and Elisabeth Kufferath, has developed a reputation for lyrical, detailed readings of a wide range of repertoire. World-renowned pianist Jonathan Biss channels his deep musical curiosity into performances and projects in the concert hall and beyond. He comes to Spivey Hall with a program of works by Schubert paired with a new work by composer and multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey. The intention is not to suggest a particular connection between the old and new works; it is to show that one can immerse oneself in the greatest music of the past and work to ensure that the present and future are more just, and richer for it.

Alan Morrison is joined by musical friends for this annual celebration of music. Known for his dynamic programming, Alan will present collaborations that highlight the capabilities of Spivey Hall’s Ruffatti organ, and its profound ability to work with other instruments.

Springtime in Atlanta would not be complete without the voices of our own Spivey Hall Children’s Choir Program. Celebrate another wonderful season and be inspired by these glorious young singers. Friday evening features all three choirs, including our Young Artists, while on Saturday and Sunday, the Children’s Choir and Tour Choir take the stage.
