The Cape Ann Symphony is a distinguished musical institution with a rich history dating back to its inception in February 1952. Founded by Sam and Helen Gordon, an East Gloucester couple with a passion for music, the symphony began as a community effort with a simple yet profound goal: to offer Cape Ann "the music you love by the people you know." The Gordons' vision materialized in the form of the Gloucester Civic Symphony Orchestra, a volunteer ensemble that quickly gained popularity, drawing an audience of 800 to its first concert on July 10th, 1952, where it performed Beethoven’s First Symphony in the local high school auditorium. For nearly three decades, Sam Gordon spearheaded the organization, which evolved into the Cape Ann Symphony Orchestra. Under his leadership, performances were free of charge, with any financial shortfalls met by Sam's personal contributions and his relentless pursuit of community support. Following Sam Gordon's passing, the symphony underwent significant changes in December 1980. New by-laws were introduced, aligning the orchestra with standard practices of community orchestras by charging admission for performances to cover costs such as professional conductors, music, hall rental, and other expenses. The symphony has seen several talented music directors and conductors over the years, including Bertram Whitman, John Murray, Armand Vorce, Royston Nash, Kay George Roberts, and Richard Vanstone. The current artistic director and conductor, Yoichi Udagawa, joined the Cape Ann Symphony in 2000 and has since led the orchestra to critical acclaim, celebrating milestones such as the 50th and 63rd anniversaries with programs that received standing ovations. Transitioning from an all-volunteer group to an all-professional orchestra, the Cape Ann Symphony has achieved a level of performance that rivals any regional symphony in the country. This transformation has allowed the organization to expand its reach beyond Cape Ann, bringing its concerts to various venues throughout Boston’s North Shore and beyond. Today, the Cape Ann Symphony continues to thrive thanks to the support of its community and the dedication of its musicians and board members. The symphony encourages the public to contribute to its legacy through donations, ensuring the continued growth and excellence of this premier regional orchestra.
