Connecticut Symphony Orchestra

Hartford, CT, United States

The Connecticut Symphony Orchestra (CSO), formerly known as the Connecticut Valley Symphony Orchestra (CVSO), is a distinguished community orchestra with a rich history that spans over nine decades. It holds the title of being the Capital Region's oldest community orchestra, having been established in 1930. The orchestra originated during the Great Depression as the String Orchestra of the Hartford School of Music. In 1968, the orchestra faced a period of declining membership which led to a significant reorganization and a name change to the Connecticut String Orchestra (CSO). This period marked a new chapter under the leadership of Renato Bonacini, the then newly appointed concertmaster of the Hartford Symphony. Bonacini's tenure as conductor, which lasted for 21 seasons, brought renewed vigor and enthusiasm to the ensemble. Following Bonacini's retirement, the orchestra was led by Thomas Crawford from 1989 to 1992, and then by Tibor Pusztai from 1993 to 2005. It was during Pusztai's time that the orchestra broadened its repertoire to regularly include woodwind and brass instruments. This expansion prompted another name change in 1995, when the orchestra became known as the Connecticut Valley Chamber Orchestra (CVCO). Christopher Hisey took the helm as the conductor from 2006 to 2010. In April 2012, Joseph Hodge was appointed as Music Director, bringing with him a high level of artistry and dynamism that invigorated both the weekly rehearsals and the performances. Hodge's tenure saw the orchestra attracting new members, featuring a variety of local and regional soloists, and expanding its audience base. In April 2014, in line with the orchestra's continuous evolution, the name was changed once again to the Connecticut Valley Symphony Orchestra (CVSO). Hodge departed in June 2018 to pursue his doctorate, leading to the 2018-2019 Season being a dedicated search period for his successor. Following the conclusion of the April 2019 concert, Paul McShee was appointed as the CVSO's newest Music Director. Under McShee's leadership, the orchestra has reached new heights and has remained committed to growth and innovation. Reflecting this commitment and a vision for the future, the orchestra underwent its most recent name change to the Connecticut Symphony Orchestra (CSO) on August 1, 2023. This change is seen as a pivotal move to support further development in all aspects of the organization. The Connecticut Symphony Orchestra continues to be a beacon of musical inspiration and enrichment for the community, upholding the power of music as its core mission.
