The Greenwich Symphony Orchestra (GSO) is a professional orchestra located in Greenwich, Connecticut, known for its world-class soloists and a series of five concert weekends per year. The orchestra performs at the acoustically renowned Performing Arts Center at Greenwich High School. The origins of the GSO date back to 1940, but it was officially established as the Greenwich Philharmonia in 1958 under the leadership of conductor Kenneth Wendrich and first president Catherine Converse. In its 25th anniversary season during 1982-1983, the Philharmonia was renamed the Greenwich Symphony Orchestra. The GSO has a history of hosting gala benefit concerts with notable performances by Victor Borge in 1986 and 1999. David Gilbert served as the Music Director for an impressive tenure of 46 years, from 1975 until his retirement in 2021. Patricia Handy held the position of Associate Conductor from 1979 to 2010, followed by Tara Simoncic, who served from 2010 to 2021. The GSO is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors, which has been led by several dedicated individuals over the years. Mary Radcliffe presided as board president for 37 years starting in 1983, exemplifying the board's mission to serve, support, and promote the orchestra. In 2021, Peter J. Tesei, the former First Selectman of Greenwich, took on the role of board chair, with Lenore de Csepel joining as Vice Chair in 2022. Throughout its history, the GSO has showcased numerous outstanding soloists, including many who have gone on to distinguished careers. Recent soloists have included Joyce Yang, John O’Conor, Chloé Kiffer, Benjamin Hochman, Jennifer Koh, Jon Nakamatsu, Sara Davis Buechner, Juho Pohjonen, Paul Watkins, and Elmar Oliveira. After an extensive international search, Stuart Malina was appointed as the new Music Director, bringing a fresh vibrancy and excitement to the GSO's orchestral performances in the 2022-2023 season. Under Maestro Malina's dynamic leadership, the GSO anticipates a future of innovative programming and continued musical excellence. The GSO also engages in educational outreach through its Young People's Concerts and various education programs, further enriching the cultural fabric of the community. The organization is supported by its membership, donations, program advertisements, and corporate sponsorship, reflecting the strong community ties and support for live orchestral music in Greenwich.
