Women in Classical Music

Two innovative, groundbreaking works open our 23 rd season. Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto each “broke the mold” of the traditional symphony and the concerto. The “Scottish” is the first symphony to be written without breaks between the four movements, foreshadowing the cyclic form of the Late Romantic period. Beethoven’s Triple Concerto is the first of its kind since the Baroque concerto grosso form, and intertwines the solo trio and the orchestra in new and innovative ways.

American Masterworks: Strike Up The Band

The Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra proudly presents the Young Artists Series, a showcase of exceptional young talent set to enchant audiences with two performances in early February 2024. The series kicks off on February 3rd at 7:00 pm at the Rancho Campana High School Performing Arts Center, followed by a matinee on February 4th at 3:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church Ventura. Also on the program is Albert Franz Doppler's "Fantaisie pastorale hongroise," showcasing the flute's lyrical and virtuosic capabilities in the hands of Eileen Zhang, a senior at Newbury Park High School.

Further highlights include Beethoven's "Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-Flat Major, Op. 19," with Lori Qian at the piano, and his "Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat Major, Op. 73," featuring Benjamin Chung. The program also includes Maurice Ravel's "Tzigane," a rhapsody for violin and orchestra that captures the essence of Romani music, performed by violinist Mia Eddy.

Artistic Director KuanFen Liu emphasizes the importance of nurturing young musicians and music patrons alike, stating, "Every young musician possesses a unique artistic voice, we must create a welcoming environment to help nurture both serious young musicians and music patrons. This is essential to the human condition."
