Opera Holland Park

London, United Kingdom

Opera Holland Park (OHP) is an independent charity and internationally-renowned opera company based in the heart of London. Established in 1996 by former General Director Michael Volpe within the local council's Libraries and Arts Services, OHP has grown into a cultural institution known for its annual summer festival that takes place in a purpose-built open-air theatre within the picturesque surroundings of Holland Park. The history of Opera Holland Park is intertwined with the history of Holland House, which serves as the backdrop for the company's performances. Holland House was originally built in 1605 by Sir Walter Cope and was known as Cope Castle. Over the centuries, the estate passed through various hands, becoming a notable social and political hub frequented by eminent figures such as Byron, Macaulay, and Dickens. The house was significantly damaged during the Second World War and the ruins, along with the grounds, were later acquired by the London County Council in 1952, eventually becoming a community resource. OHP's inaugural production was Verdi's "Un ballo in maschera" in 1996. Since then, the company has been known for producing a balanced repertoire that includes both well-loved classics and lesser-known works, particularly Italian rarities. In 2000, James Clutton joined the company, and under his and Volpe's direction, the company expanded its offerings, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing in the pit by 2001. The company's commitment to nurturing young talent was marked by the launch of the Young Artists Scheme in 2012, aimed at developing and showcasing emerging talents. OHP's dedication to outreach and education is exemplified by its award-winning Inspire programme, which won the Education and Outreach category at the International Opera Awards in 2018. The programme aims to break down barriers to opera by engaging with the community through various initiatives. In 2015, OHP transitioned into an independent charity with a board of Trustees chaired by Charles Mackay CBE. This move was followed by several significant milestones, including co-productions with international opera companies and the commissioning of family operas like "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Will Todd. The company's performance space has seen several upgrades over the years, with a new canopy and auditorium built in 2007 and a complete redesign in 2020 by international performance designer takis, which led to it being described as "London's greenest theatre" by the Evening Standard. Following Michael Volpe's retirement in 2020, James Clutton took over as CEO and Director of Opera. In 2023, OHP commissioned "Itch," an opera adapted from Simon Mayo's best-selling novels, in a co-production with the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto. Opera Holland Park continues to be a unique voice in the arts world, known for its creativity, community engagement, integrity, and respect for the arts and the environment. With a mission to share the cultural, wellbeing, and social benefits of opera, OHP remains committed to making opera accessible to everyone in West London and beyond, welcoming over 30,000 audiences each summer to its performances.
