Rimrock Opera Foundation

Billings, MT, United States

Rimrock Opera Foundation, originally founded as Rimrock Opera Company in 1999 by Morry C. Matson in Billings, Montana, aimed to enhance the region's cultural life by making opera accessible through high-quality productions, outreach, and educational programming. Before its establishment, Billings had limited exposure to fully staged operatic performances, often relying on piano accompaniment for touring groups. The company’s inaugural production of Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" in 1999 was a notable success, breaking even and making a profit, which is rare in the opera world. Over the years, Rimrock Opera produced 21 operas at Alberta Bair Theatre, including popular works like "Madama Butterfly," "Carmen," and "Aida." The foundation also offered educational opportunities through its outreach programs and the Rimrock Opera Chorus for Kids. In 2013, Rimrock Opera merged with Venture Theatre to form the NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, expanding its offerings to include a wider range of theatrical and musical performances. The merger aimed to provide growth, security, and a comprehensive business plan to benefit the community.
