Washington Concert Opera

Washington, DC, United States

Washington Concert Opera (WCO) was founded in 1986 by Stephen Crout in Washington, D.C., with the mission to present rarely performed operatic masterpieces in concert form. Operating from Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University, WCO focuses on the music by staging full-length operas without sets, costumes, or props, emphasizing the performers' interaction with the audience. The organization has produced nearly 60 operas, featuring renowned artists like Renée Fleming and Lawrence Brownlee. Praised by The Washington Post and Opera News, WCO is integral to D.C.'s musical landscape. The company is committed to making opera accessible and relevant, aiming for national and international recognition through its unique mission. WCO engages with the community by partnering with local schools and universities, offering educational programs and professional development opportunities. Additionally, a young professionals group provides networking and discounted access to performances. Looking ahead, WCO plans to continue delivering exceptional performances and expanding its educational initiatives, enhancing cultural life in the area.
