It has been described as a summation of all his previous compositions.

Multi-talented composer Jacob Mühlrad has made a big splash in recent years. In this concert, soloist Magnus Holmander premieres Mühlrad’s brand new clarinet concerto, commissioned by the Swedish Radio’s concert hall, Berwaldhallen. Additionally, conductor Martin Fröst leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Felix Mendelssohn’s third symphony.

With its striking first movement, Beethoven’s fifth symphony just has to be the most famous work in the history of classical music. The Israeli composer Ella Milch-Sheriff has based her tribute to Beethoven, The Eternal Stranger, on one of Beethoven’s dreams. It presents the legendary composer in a new and unexpected way. We will also have the privilege of hearing the violist Lawrence Power in Anders Hillborg’s Viola Concert, commissioned by, among others, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

A musical portrait of the groundbreaking singer-songwriter Scott Walker: an outsider and a pioneer who became famous as a teen pop idol and went on to reinvent himself on several occasions during his more than 60-year-long career. He has inspired countless other artists including David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Brian Eno, Nick Cave and Radiohead, and this concert with Magnus Carlson and Hans Ek features both music by Scott Walker himself and some of the music inspired by him.

Norwegian composer and music critic Pauline Hall was a prominent figure in the cultural life in Norway during the early part of the 20th. The orchestral piece Foire is a part of her impressionistic Verlain suite from 1929. For his opera Intermezzo Richard Strauss wrote his own libretto based on events from his marriage, the subject matter being a misunderstanding between him and his wife that almost led to divorce. The work’s stylish entr’acte has become especially popular. The concert will conclude with Antonín Dvořák’s airy and life-affirming sixth symphony. The young Czech musician Petr Popelka, principal conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, will be at the helm of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Robert Schumann claimed never to have spent as much energy and care on his music as he did on his evocative incidental music for Manfred, based on Lord Byron’s dramatic poem. The finale consists of Richard Strauss’ majestic An Alpine Symphony  – impressions from “a day’s walk” in the mountains.

Anna Ternheim and Maja Francis connected during the 2022 edition of popular TV programme Så mycket bättre, finding common experiences in their musical lives. Both have lived in and recorded songs in Nashville, known as the home of country music. This concert presents a selection of their own songs, as well as classics from the country repertoire, highlighting the genre’s important storytelling heritage.

The star violinist Christian Tetzlaff returns to Berwaldhallen with Robert Schumann’s violin concerto, a controversial work that has become one of the composer’s most popular. Another work that faced resistance at the time is Sibelius’s fourth symphony, although it has since been taken up by musicians and music lovers across the world, including the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and its music director, Daniel Harding. And finally, György Ligeti’s Atmosphères, an evocative work that both penetrates the very soul of the listener and reaches far into the cosmos.

Welcome to a concert where the violin takes centre stage, Johannes Brahms’ expressive violin concerto performed by the world-renowned American violinist Hilary Hahn. And in Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, the whole violin section gets to shine, all under the direction of conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada. The concert opens with Ludwig van Beethoven’s overture to Heinrich Joseph von Collins’s tragedy Coriolan.

The 25th of January Thomas Nordegren and Louise Epstein will make their last broadcast after twelve years with their show Noredegren & Epstein in Swedish Radio P1 with a live audience at Berwaldhallen. The final episode will be an extra-long and extra-everything show with secret quests, silly antics and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra together with chief conductor Daniel Harding on stage.

Gustav Holst’s The Planets has inspired an abundance of film music, not least John Williams’s soundtrack to the Star Wars films. Plus Alban Berg’s poignant song cycle Seven Early Songs with soprano Johanna Wallroth, who has been named Classical Artist of the Year by the radio station P2.

One of Sweden’s foremost pianists celebrates his 60th birthday at Berwaldhallen with one of the forgotten gems of the piano repertoire. In his Piano Concerto in F-sharp Minor, Aleksandr Scriabin blends the pianist and the orchestra into an inseparable musical whole. We can look forward to a celebratory union between the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Roland Pöntinen. The popular young conductor Christoph Koncz then interprets symphonic masterpieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Liszt.

Wilhelm Stenhammar’s The Song is, in turn, lyrical as well as majestic. It is rarely performed, as it requires a large orchestra as well as vocal soloists and upwards of a hundred choristers of all ages. Patrik Ringborg conducts this performance of Stenhammar’s tribute to choral singing as a force for unity, as well as the long-awaited world premiere of Emmy Lindström’s Song Without Words for female chorus and orchestra: a personal tribute to Stenhammar.

Berwaldhallen celebrates pianist and composer Sergei Rachmaninoff in five special programmes this autumn. Daniele Rustioni conducts the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Rachmaninoff’s third symphony, an important piece in the composer’s production. Acclaimed violinist Francesca Dego also makes her debut in Berwaldhallen with Ferruccio Busoni’s fresh and youthful violin concerto.

Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi is lauded for his interpretations of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music. In this concert he plays Mozart’s 25th piano concerto with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste, who has a close relation to the symphonies of Anton Bruckner, leads the orchestra in his last symphony.

When Swedish composer Ludvig Norman passed away in 1885, he left behind an unfinished piano concerto in D minor. Renowned pianist Peter Friis Johansson has completed the concerto and is giving the premiere performance here in Berwaldhallen with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Christian Reif.

Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s acclaimed new orchestral work ARCHORA and Hans Abrahamsen’s horn concerto are both performed here for the first time in Sweden, the latter featuring the orchestra’s principal hornist Chris Parkes. Acclaimed Finnish conductor Eva Ollikainen concludes the concert with Jean Sibelius’ beloved fifth symphony.

Jean Sibelius only wrote one violin concerto, but nevertheless his D minor concerto from 1904 is regarded by many as a success. Renowned violinist María Dueñas performs it here with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and its music director Daniel Harding, who also presents Sibelius’ symphonies nos. 1 and 7.

In six movements, Richard Strauss’ symphonic poem for a large orchestra, Ein Heldenleben, recounts parts of a hero’s life. Chief conductor Daniel Harding leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in this philosophical epic from 1898. The violin was almost considered a hero by the German composer Max Bruch; he found that it could “sing a melody better than a piano, and the melody is the soul of music.” He was close to many of the most prominent violinists of the 19th century, and he wrote nine works for the instrument; most famous is his first concert, Opus 26, in G-major from 1866. In tonight’s concert, the young Swedish-Norwegian shooting star Johan Dalene tackles Bruch’s opus.

We encounter heroes and anti-heroes in the name of love in Gustav Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a wayfarer), sung by the world-famous Swedish baritone Peter Mattei, and in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra’s performance under its conductor laureate Esa‑Pekka Salonen of Béla Bartók’s Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin and Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique.

Mozart completed his five violin concertos between April and December 1775, when he was nineteen years old. This is a chance to hear star violinist Janine Jansen in both his fourth and his fifth concerto. Also music by three French masters from different periods: Farrenc wrote her exuberant Overture No. 2 in 1834, Fauré’s emotional music for Pelléas et Mélisande was composed just before 1900 and Ravel’s evocative Le tombeau de Couperin during and after the First World War.

International violinist Janine Jansen is a recurring guest at Berwaldhallen. She will be interpreting Mozart’s famous violin concerto and Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin, which he composed in memory of friends that had fallen in the First World War. The concert opens with Louise Farrenc’s exuberant Overture No. 2.

When conductor laureate Herbert Blomstedt returns to Berwaldhallen he will be leading the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in two rarely performed works: Franz Berwald’s Symphony No. 2 -“Sinfonie capricieuse” and Franz Schubert’s melodic Symphony No. 6. Although the two composers, born within a year of each other, were never properly recognized during their lifetime, their groundbreaking works reveal their inquiring minds and creative zeal

Martin Fröst is one of the world’s foremost clarinet virtuosos, and has in recent years also established himself as a conductor. He will here be appearing with the soprano Johanna Wallroth – radio station P2’s Classical Artist of the Year – and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in music by Mozart, Carl Maria von Weber and Mendelssohn. Fröst will be the soloist in Weber’s Romantic first clarinet concerto – a work that boasts a wide emotional range and virtuoso challenges for the soloist.

“Music is life and therefore inextinguishable,” was the motto Carl Nielsen chose for his dramatic fourth symphony – The Inextinguishable. Nielsen’s work will be interpreted by Hannu Lintu, principal conductor of the Finnish national Ooppera Baletti theatre in Helsinki. The programme opens with Korngold’s emotional violin concerto in which the composer combines late Romantic phrasing with evocative film themes. The world-renowned American violinist Gil Shaham makes a welcome return to Berwaldhallen.

Fynsk foraar is Carl Nielsen’s last big choral work, and is also regarded as his most Danish one, with its poetic lyrics about when spring comes to the island Fyn. Furthermore, Tor Aulin’s third violin concerto from 1895 , Bo Lind’s orchestral A Merry ouverture and Pezzo Concertante for bass clarinett and strings, and Otto Olsson’s hymn Psalmus CX. An expansive anniversary programme celebrating Anders Hillborg, one of today’s most recognised Swedish composers. Among the highlights are Hillborg’s second violin concerto with Norwegian rising star Eldbjørg Hemsing and the large orchestral and choral work Sirens with soloists Ida Falk Winland and Hannah Holgersson. Conductor laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Swedish Radio Choir and Eric Ericson Chamber Choir.

The Soloist Prize 2024: Finals

Alva Holm, winner of the 2022 Soloist Prize, plays Dmitri Shostakovich’s first violin concerto with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and young Finnish conductor Tarmo Peltokoski, who also leads the orchestra in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ sixth symphony. Two works composed at around the same time, but under entirely different circumstances.

Since her debut in 2013, singer and songwriter Seinabo Sey has become one of Sweden's most sought after artists with tours in Europe and the USA. For her music, she has been awarded five Grammys, and has been named Artist of the Year by P3 Gold, among many other things. Now she comes to the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra to perform her songs in symphonic arrangements, under the direction of Jonas Nydesjö.

Conductor Anja Bihlmaier leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in a program that begins with the 19th-century French composer Mel Bonis's Trois femmes de legende, which musically portrays Ofelia, Salome and Cleopatra. Through music by Modest Mussorgsky and Aram Khachaturyan, the concert ends with a suite from Igor Stravinsky's legendary Firebird , written for the Russian Ballet in Paris in 1910.

Thirteen Day Concert 2025

Ludwig van Beethoven's sixth symphony was named by the composer himself as the "Pastoral Symphony", as he described his love for the countryside in it. Ernest Chausson's romantic song cycle Poème de l'amour et de la mer (Poem of Love and the Sea) describes both the flowers of the sea and the death of love, and in Jean Sibelius's dance intermezzo the shepherd god Pan's hunt for the mountain nymph Echo is set to music. Roberto Gonzalés-Monjas leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Italian baritone Andrè Schuen in this concert where the love for and in nature is the focus.

First Aid Kit Meets Sweden's Radio Symphony Orchestra

Future first guest conductor Maxim Emelyanychev leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's last symphony number 41. The addition "Jupiter" was added after the composer's death and is believed to refer to the Roman god of the same name, whose lightning can be heard in the opening chord of the first movement. German-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt performs Grażyna Bacewicz's Second Cello Concerto and the program also includes Sergei Prokofiev's imaginative suite The Love for the Three Oranges .

World-class violinist Leonidas Kavakos returns to Berwaldhallen with Dmitri Shostakovich's second violin concerto from 1967, which was also the composer's last solo concerto. The Colombian violinist and conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada also leads the Svergies Radio Symphony Orchestra in three works by Richard Strauss; the symphonic poems Tod und Verklärung and Till Eulenspiegel's lustige Streiche as well as music from the opera Rosenkavalieren .
