Eric Ericson Award winner Krista Audere makes her debut as principal guest conductor with the Radio Choir during this year’s edition of the Baltic Sea Festival. In the work Calligrammes, the singers interact with specially built digital instruments, and then North Sea, written by the new rising star Alvin Vikman, is premiered.

This exceptional concert also features the esteemed Swedish Radio Choir and a lineup of distinguished soloists: soprano Julia Kleiter, mezzo-soprano Katija Dragojevic, tenor Maximilian Schmitt, and baritone John Lundgren.

The evening begins with Arnold Schönberg's profound interpretation of the Jewish prayer "Kol nidre," setting the stage for the main highlight: Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Renowned for its final chorus, the "Ode to Joy," Beethoven's Ninth stands as a universal message of brotherhood and unity.

This concert marks a significant change in the program, with Case Scaglione stepping in for Herbert Blomstedt as conductor, leading to the replacement of the "Missa Solemnis" with Schönberg's "Kol nidre" and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. Beethoven's Ninth

Robert Schumann claimed never to have spent as much energy and care on his music as he did on his evocative incidental music for Manfred, based on Lord Byron’s dramatic poem. Brahms was impressed and named it Schumann’s best work. Another evocative piece of music is Schumann’s Nachtlied for choir and orchestra, composed in just a week. The finale consists of Richard Strauss’ majestic An Alpine Symphony  – impressions from “a day’s walk” in the mountains.

This year, young Latvian conductor Aivis Greters conducts the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Swedish Radio Choir. Berwaldhallen celebrates pianist and composer Sergei Rachmaninoff in five special programmes this autumn. Sergei Rachmaninoff considered his choral symphony The Bells – inspired by the poem of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe – to be one of his personal favourites. Also, extraordinary violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann plays Edward Elgar’s beloved violin concerto.

Wilhelm Stenhammar’s The Song is, in turn, lyrical as well as majestic. It is rarely performed, as it requires a large orchestra as well as vocal soloists and upwards of a hundred choristers of all ages. Patrik Ringborg conducts this performance of Stenhammar’s tribute to choral singing as a force for unity, as well as the long-awaited world premiere of Emmy Lindström’s Song Without Words for female chorus and orchestra: a personal tribute to Stenhammar.

Fynsk foraar is Carl Nielsen’s last big choral work, and is also regarded as his most Danish one, with its poetic lyrics about when spring comes to the island Fyn. Furthermore, Tor Aulin’s third violin concerto from 1895 , Bo Lind’s orchestral A Merry ouverture and Pezzo Concertante for bass clarinett and strings, and Otto Olsson’s hymn Psalmus CX. Conductor Gudrun Dahlqvist leads the he Swedish Radio Symphony Orhestra, the Swedish Radio Choir and soloists.

An expansive anniversary programme celebrating Anders Hillborg, one of today’s most recognised Swedish composers. Among the highlights are Hillborg’s second violin concerto with Norwegian rising star Eldbjørg Hemsing and the large orchestral and choral work Sirens with soloists Ida Falk Winland and Hannah Holgersson. Conductor laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Swedish Radio Choir and Eric Ericson Chamber Choir.

Part three of Esa-Pekka Salonen's residency, where the honorary conductor leads the the Swedish Radio Choir, the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir and soloists Malena Ernman and Jennifer France in György Ligeti's Requiem, written for the choir in 1965 and used by Stanley Kubrick in his movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Additionally, Janine Jansen joins the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Sergei Prokofiev's lyrical and virtuosic Violin Concerto No. 1 in D major. The concert begins with the Swedish premiere of Salonen's Tiu  (Finnish for a dozen), which was written for the 20th anniversary of Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Salonen himself describes the work as 'palindromes, fanfares, and clouds for orchestra.’

Matthew Peterson, the American composer who has settled in Dalarna, weaves together his own texts about life’s challenges with fragments of poems by Dan Andersson, Gustaf Fröding, and Erik Axel Karlfeldt in a winding journey through shifting musical landscapes in his second symphony, The Wanderers, composed for the Swedish Radio Choir and Dalasinfoniettan.

Gabriel Fauré's beloved Requiem, known for its calm and peaceful character unlike other requiems, performed by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Swedish Radio Choir under the direction of Fredrik Burstedt. The concert begins with a performance of Austrian Olga Neuwirth's Tombeau II Hommage a Pierre Boulez, followed by the Swedish turn-of-the-century composer Helena Munktell's Suite for Large Orchestra 'Suite Symphonique' in four movements.

Fauré’s Requiem

Felix Mendelssohn filled his magnificent Second Symphony with festive fanfares, roaring orchestral cascades, and atmospheric choirs to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press. The first thing Gutenberg printed with his revolutionary invention was the Bible, and there Mendelssohn found verses that praise both God and enlightenment. When Mendelssohn’s cantata symphony is performed in Berwaldhallen, the Swedish Radio Choir will be joined by the Västerås Sinfonietta and soloists and conductor Simon Crawford-Phillips.
