Opera at Florham

Convent Station, NJ, United States

About Opera at Florham Opera at Florham is a cultural institution dedicated to the art of opera, located in Madison, New Jersey, at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Founded in 1982 by Violetta DuPont and under the guidance of Dr. Charles Del Rosso, chair of the Music Department, Opera at Florham has evolved from its roots as an extension of the university's Music Department to a standalone, non-profit organization committed to bringing operatic performances to the community. The organization's mission is multifaceted, aiming to provide affordable and accessible operatic and related musical performances to all sectors of the community, educate the public about opera through outreach programs, maintain a high level of artistic excellence, and support young artists through performance opportunities and a vocal competition. Opera at Florham is known for its professional vocalists who perform in recital, concert, and competition, showcasing opera, Broadway, and the classic songbook. The concert series is notable for being the only long-running opera recital series in New Jersey. Each concert features vocalists from around the world, performing a mix of classic and rare pieces from opera and Broadway, with informative stories, history, and facts about the music. A highlight of Opera at Florham's annual calendar is the International Vocal Competition, established in 1987 as the Violetta DuPont International Vocal Competition. This event attracts young talents in opera who compete for significant cash prizes before a panel of celebrated judges and a live audience. Many winners of this competition go on to have successful international careers. The organization's history is closely intertwined with the history of its home, Fairleigh Dickinson University's Florham Campus. The campus is home to the Mansion, a 125-year-old Gilded Age estate named Florham, a combination of the names of its original owners, Florence and Hamilton Twombly. The Mansion, designed by the architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White with landscaping by Frederick Law Olmsted, serves as an elegant backdrop for Opera at Florham's events, particularly Lenfell Hall, the former music room of the Mansion. In 1995, Opera at Florham was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, though it continues its affiliation with Fairleigh Dickinson University. This partnership allows the organization to perform in the university's Lenfell Hall, offer lectures and catered lunches in Hartman Lounge, and utilize the university's office and meeting spaces. FDU students often assist with Opera at Florham's operations, and a member of the FDU Music Department serves on the organization's board. The legacy of the founders is honored through the organization's continued dedication to the arts. Violetta DuPont is remembered for her vision and tireless work for Opera at Florham, while Stephen DeMaio, a trustee, artistic director, and benefactor, is recognized for elevating the organization to a level of excellence through his guidance and support. Today, Opera at Florham continues to enrich the cultural landscape of New Jersey and beyond, fostering a love for opera and supporting the next generation of operatic talent.
