Howard University Department of Music

Howard University Department of Music of the College of Fine Arts was organized in 1914 by vote of the Board of Trustees upon recommendation of the President of the University, Dr. Stephen M. Newman. It was then called the Conservatory of Music. The circumstances which led to the creation of this new unit within the University may best be explained in the words of the writer of the following statement which appeared in the University Bulletin at that time.
