In August 2020, the Arizona Board of Regents approved the amalgamation of the School of Music with the dance and theatre programs, under the leadership of Dr. Heather Landes as the inaugural director. This merger created a central hub for performing arts education, exposing students to a broad range of disciplines. #### Music The music program, with a history dating back over a century to the late 1800s, began when ASU was known as the Territorial Normal School. The program has evolved significantly since then, from its first full-time professional music teacher hired in 1902 to the establishment of bachelor's and master's degrees in music in the mid-20th century. The Department of Music attained school status in 1980 and began offering doctoral degrees that same year. The program currently serves over 800 students across various levels of music education. #### Dance Dance at ASU has a 77-year history, starting with interpretive dance classes in 1931. The program has undergone significant expansion, including the introduction of undergraduate degrees and the formation of a student dance company. In 1977, the dance program became part of the Herberger College of the Arts, gaining national recognition for its faculty, choreography, and innovative programs. It merged with the School of Theatre and Film in 2012. #### Theatre Theatre has been a part of ASU since 1920. Over the years, the focus has shifted to performance, production, and theatre education, with the department of theatre emerging in 1977. The program has expanded to include film production and studies, with the recent establishment of The Sidney Poitier New American Film School in August 2020. ### Academics The School of Music, Dance and Theatre offers a comprehensive range of 49 graduate and undergraduate degrees, 6 undergraduate minors, and 6 certificates. It employs 41 faculty and staff members and enrolls 11,000 students from outside the School each year in various courses. ### Rankings and Performances The School's graduate programs are ranked among the top 20 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Each year, the School presents over 800 concerts and recitals. ### Facilities The School boasts several performance halls, including the Paul V. Galvin Playhouse, ASU Gammage designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Margaret Gisolo Dance Theatre, Katzin Concert Hall, Lyceum Theatre, Organ Hall, ASU Performing and Media Arts Building, Recital Hall, Evelyn Smith Music Theatre, and Studio 133.
