San Francisco, CA, United States
The Curran in San Francisco is a historic theater that has become a cornerstone of the city's cultural landscape. Established in 1922, the Curran was the vision of Homer Curran, a Missouri native and Stanford University graduate with a passion for the arts. After moving to San Francisco and gaining valuable experience in local theater management, Curran partnered with Shubert Incorporated, a prominent New York theatrical corporation, to construct the Curran Theatre. The theater was strategically positioned as the premier West Coast destination in Shubert's national chain of theaters, with Curran's deep understanding of the local audience playing a key role in its success. Since its opening, the Curran has hosted over 8,000 performances, including many pre-Broadway engagements and long-running shows such as a five-year stint of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera," which was the longest domestic run outside of New York City at the time. The Curran's mission is to serve as an artistic hub in San Francisco, engaging both new and existing audiences with visionary and bold works. The theater has welcomed a variety of productions, including "Fences" in 1987, "Wicked" in 2003, and the groundbreaking musical "Fun Home" in 2017, which marked the reopening of the Curran after a significant restoration and renovation. The theater also takes pride in having been the West Coast home of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," which became the longest-running play in the city's history with 297 performances. Beyond its role as a performance venue, the Curran has been involved in shaping the San Francisco theater community. Homer Curran, after whom the theater is named, was a key figure in advancing West Coast theater. He founded the Civic Light Opera Company in 1939 and co-authored the operettas "Song of Norway" and "Magdalena, A Musical Adventure." He was also a successful producer. The Curran continues to attract attention with its impressive lineup of shows, including "The Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs," "Sesame Street Live Say Hello," "Joe Jackson Solo and The Music of Max Champion," "Hannah Gadsby: Woof," "Mike Birbiglia: Please Stop the Ride," and "The Cher Show." The theater's dedication to presenting high-quality, diverse, and innovative performances is evident in its programming and community engagement. The Curran's commitment to excellence extends to its team, as the theater seeks dedicated and passionate individuals to join its workforce. While not currently hiring for specific roles, the Curran values a diverse workforce and is an equal opportunity employer. The theater's restoration has garnered significant press coverage, with accolades for its return to glory and the modern enhancements that complement its historic charm. The Curran is located at 450 Geary Street in San Francisco, with a press office that handles both national and Bay Area public relations. As the Curran looks to the future, it remains focused on its mission to be a cultural hub for the Bay Area, continuing to find exciting shows to thrill and entice audiences. The theater's storied history and dedication to the arts make it a beloved institution in San Francisco's vibrant cultural scene.
