The University of Connecticut's School of Fine Arts Music Department, commonly referred to as UConn Music, is a comprehensive and close-knit musical learning community with a mission to educate students to become performers, scholars, and teachers. It also aims to provide students across the university with courses and performing activities to cultivate their creative skills and artistic sensibilities in music of diverse cultures and historical periods. Furthermore, UConn Music is dedicated to making significant scholarly and artistic contributions to the field of music through research, performance, and composition, as well as engaging with local, regional, and state communities through public concerts, lectures, and school outreach programs. UConn Music boasts a faculty of approximately fifty members, recognized as top-performing artists, teachers, and scholars nationwide. The student body consists of thirty graduate students and around 180 undergraduates pursuing various bachelor's degrees in music. The department's size and comprehensive scope ensure a rich experience for students, from opera singers and jazz improvisers to music historians, fostering collaboration in both classroom and performance settings. As the most comprehensive public university music program in New England, UConn Music offers degrees including the BA, BM, MA, MM, DMA, and Ph.D. It brings together students from a wide range of musical backgrounds to study in a close-knit community within a large research university. The curriculum emphasizes fundamental musical knowledge and skills based in the western classical tradition, providing a solid foundation of musicianship for the 21st century. Located in close proximity to Hartford, Boston, and New York City, UConn Music provides students with opportunities to experience the work of world-class performers, some of whom are faculty members. Undergraduate music majors participate in the department's ensemble program and receive private lessons from faculty on their primary instrument. The department maintains an active performance schedule with recitals by students, faculty, and visiting artists, as well as concerts by department ensembles. Regular lectures and masterclasses by scholars and visiting artists are integral to the department's vibrant academic life. Collaboration with other departments within UConn's School of Fine Arts is common, with operas produced in collaboration with the Department of Dramatic Arts, masterclasses at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts, and student concerts at the Benton Museum of Art.
