Principal Trumpet Manny Laureano, who joined the Minnesota Orchestra in 1981 after four years as principal with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, has performed solos in all the Orchestra’s concert series and served as an assistant conductor during the 2005-06 season. In 1983 he performed the American premiere of the Wildgans Concerto for Trumpet with Leonard Slatkin conducting. In 2003 he premiered Stephen Paulus’ Concerto for Two Trumpets and Orchestra, which was written for him and Doc Severinsen, who was then the Orchestra’s principal pops conductor. His other solos with the Orchestra have included trumpet concertos by Hummel and Haydn, Copland’s Quiet City, Clarke’s Southern Cross, Vizzutti’s Compadre, Hertel’s Concerto a cinque in D major, Bach’s Second Brandenburg Concerto, and concertos by Arutunian and Tomasi. Most recently, he was featured as the co-soloist in the Concerto for Piano and Trumpet No. 1 by Shostakovich. He has commissioned and performed several new pieces for trumpet and orchestra including works by Michael Gilbertson and Reinaldo Moya.

The University Singers, Campus Singers, and the Women’s Chorus present an end of the year concert featuring a variety of styles genres, and composers.

Anne Boleyn dramatizes the life and legacy of Henry VIII’s notorious second wife, who helped change the course of the nation’s history. In Howard Brenton’s epic play, we are transported to the 16th century, where the brilliant-but-reckless young Anne, confident in her sexuality and in her love for Henry, leads the charge for England’s Protestant Reformation. While her marriage to the King provides her with opportunities to further the Protestant cause, the bitter battle between political and religious factions makes her vulnerable to conspiracy charges. Meanwhile, in 1603, King James I discovers Anne’s belongings, which inspires him to explore his own gender and sexuality, while being haunted by her ghost and the religious conflict she helped introduce. This production challenges how Anne Boleyn has been traditionally viewed as either the pawn of an ambitious family or a predator manipulating her way to power, and shows how daring to disrupt the status-quo made her lose her head.

Music can be a potent meeting place between religious traditions, offering a portal for audiences and musicians into another culture. Echoes of the Divine, using a salon format that includes both performance and conversation, features violinist Stephanie Arado, pianist Amy Grinsteiner, guitarist Chris Kachian, and narrator David Jordan Harris. Among the composers whose work is performed are Arvo Pärt, Ofer Ben-Amots, Joseph Achron, Maurice Ravel, Gerald Cohen, Komitas, Isabella Leonarda, and Andrés Segovia.

An interdisciplinary humanist and multigenre writer, Dr. Shana L. Redmond (Columbia University) thinks and creates at the intersection of music, identity, and power. She has written extensively about the Black anthems that serve as both a repository for collective memory and mobilizing agent for social and political change, as well as about the iconic people who compose those soundtracks. With the protection and celebration of Black living at its center, “No Weapon” discusses the suspended state(s) of Black survival, anti-Black violence, and the music that informs and exceeds each.

Modeled after the nineteenth century oratorios by Mendelssohn, “The Three Holy Children” by Irish composer Charles Stanford is a dramatic oratorio about the period of the captivity of the Jews under Nebuchadnezzar, and the miracle of the preservation of the Three Holy Children, who, for refusing to worship Bel, are cast into the fiery furnace by order of the Assyrian monarch.

Writing in 1960 about the cultural consequences of modernity, Puerto Rican writer José Balseiro stated: “Like the mazurka, the [Puerto Rican] danza lives on as a concert idiom rather than the social dance it once was” (Díaz Díaz, Manuel 2009). Certainly, by the time of this statement, and as part of a nation-building project in a colonial context, Puerto Rico’s cultural elite had long established the danza, a pan-Latin American phenomenon, as a prime national symbol, locating its demise as a contemporary art form between the 1930s and 1940s. Although certainly grounded on material and discursive records that cannot be simply dismissed, the partiality of prevailing teleological narratives of the danza like these become ever more apparent when reexamined vis-à-vis issues of class (Quintero 2020), politics, institutional privilege, racial imaginaries (Viera 2020), and intellectual elitism (Allende 2010) even in the context of Puerto Rico. Similarly, when it comes to historiography, there is the question of which memories, communities, places, and ways of engaging with it have been excluded from these accounts, and what would change when those are considered.

Imagine there is a perceptual quality you experience when listening to your favorite music. You want to understand that experience better, and specifically you want to understand what sound or score features play a role in that experience. The problem is that pre-existing theoretical frameworks do not seem to get at the experience you want to understand. Perhaps the music includes a familiar chord progression, but the “sound” of that chord progression is not the experiential quality that you want to explore—the quality you want to understand is more specific. Anyone who has ever heard an indescribable quality in the works of Maurice Ravel—perhaps a difficult-to-define modal quality in the Piano Trio, or a unique kind of richness in Le Tombeau de Couperin—will understand the curiosity driving this question.

Dive deep into the world of mariachi in the United States. Join for a lively, onstage performance Academia Cesar Chavez’s “mariachito” (little mariachi), followed by a discussion about the profound impact mariachi has on fostering a sense of belonging and pride among Mexican and Mexican-American communities. Renowned author and journalist Cecilia Ballí will discuss how mariachi serves as a transformative space for young adults, as well as how she finds inspiration and connection through mariachi—a musical genre that she says knows no borders. Together, we will celebrate the resilience of immigrant communities and how this rich musical tradition serves as a powerful vessel for immigrant communities to preserve their culture, traditions, and identify.

Stickney has recorded and performed with the “Crash Test Dummies”, jammed with young oud students in the West Bank, given concerts in a mine in South-Tyrol, in a New York McDonalds, in Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Moscow, Madras, Moldavia.. He’s played Broadway pits in NY, Wagner with the Berlin Philharmonic, toured with the Fantasticks in Japan, and appears regularly on page 97 of Patricia Cornwell’s novel “From Potter’s Field.”

Irish Inspired: Victoria Vargas, Mezzo and the Jamison Ensemble

Composers have long been fascinated with the idea of musicking with dead people – Charles Gounod channeled J. S. Bach as his accompanist; Stravinsky rose Pergolesi from the grave to co-compose a ballet. These posthumous duets became achievable in a more visceral way with the advent of recording technology, and later, holograms – Natalie Cole was able to sing with her deceased father, and Kenny G communed with the long-departed Louis Armstrong. This presentation will take a deeper dive into recorded post-mortem collaboration, and the ways that artificial intelligence has affected them, using the Beatles’ last song, “Now and Then” (2023) as a case study.

Michelle Lou is a composer and performer that works mainly in the realm of electro-acoustic music. Her work has been presented at Wien Modern, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Darmstadt Ferienkurse, Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik, The Festival of New American Music, the MATA Festival in New York City, The 66th American Music Festival at the National Gallery in Washington D.C., The Rainy Days Festival in Luxembourg, Ultima Festival in Oslo, amongst others. She received degrees in double bass performance and composition from UC San Diego and Stanford University. She was a Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University and an Elliott Carter Rome Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Rome. She has taught composition and electronic music at Dartmouth College, the University of California, Santa Cruz and is currently on faculty at UC San Diego.

The sjel duo is made up of saxophonist Dr. Sarah Hetrick, Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Arkansas, and percussionist Paul Millette, Assistant Professor of Practice in Percussion at the University of Texas, San Antonio. Most recently, sjel was featured on the opening concert of the 2022 North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference at the University of Southern Mississippi, and they have been invited to teach and give recitals throughout the United States. As avid supporters of new music, Paul and Sarah have commissioned new works from over thirty composers, including recent collaborations with Kimberly Osberg and Katahj Copley.

Clarinetist Anthony McGill is one of classical music’s most recognizable and brilliantly multifaceted figures. He serves as the principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, that orchestra’s first African-American principal player. Hailed for his “trademark brilliance, penetrating sound and rich character” (The New York Times), as well as for his “exquisite combination of technical refinement and expressive radiance” (The Baltimore Sun), McGill also serves as an ardent advocate for helping music education reach underserved communities. McGill was honored to take part in the inauguration of President Obama, premiering a piece by John Williams alongside violinist Itzhak Perlman, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and pianist Gabriela Montero. McGill appears regularly as a soloist with top orchestras around North America including the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, Baltimore Symphony, San Diego Symphony, and Kansas City Symphony, and is a favorite collaborator of the Brentano, Daedalus, Guarneri, JACK, Miró, Pacifica, Shanghai, Takacs, and Tokyo Quartets, as well as Emanuel Ax, Inon Barnatan, Yefim Bronfman, Gil Shaham, Midori, Mitsuko Uchida, and Lang Lang. A graduate of the Curtis Institute, McGill previously served as the principal clarinet of the Metropolitan Opera. He serves on the faculty of the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, Bard College’s Conservatory of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music.

The Smitty Pit is an eight-piece band fusing R&B, pop, funk, and neo-soul vibes and music to various audiences. Recently endorsed by the great American drummer Garry “Jelly Bean” Johnson, the Twin Cities-based band frequently performs across the metro area for weddings, concerts, and corporate and community events.

Let Freedom Ring: The 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington

A community concert band-style ensemble that performs several outdoor concerts in the Twin Cities area each summer. The band is composed of approximately 125 people, including current U of M students, alumni, and others that may or may not have previous affiliation with the U of M.

A spectacular multimedia symphony featuring 100-plus member chorus, orchestra and video projections, bringing to life da Vinci’s spectacular drawings, inventions and texts. The concert will also include a performance of Eric Whitacre’s stunning Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine.
