Award-winning classical guitar virtuoso Tal Hurwitz performs at Portland State University as part of the CDZ Collegium Muisa Classical Guitar Series. Mr. Hurwitz has garnered international acclaim in concerts and masterclasses around the world, showcasing his reputation for technical mastery and artistic clarity. This will be his second visit to Oregon this year. He will be the featured artist for the Corvallis Classical Guitar Festival November 15th and 16th.

PSU & CDZ Collegium Musica Classical Guitar Series: Tal Hurwitz, award-winning guitarist

Yelling Choir is a femme, women, and nonbinary performance process, created by Maxx Katz, that reimagines voice, presence, gender, and power. The choir is a vehicle of experimental relational technology, using play, somatic awareness, and vocal practice. This performance is a collaborative composition which calls for a socially aware aesthetic of listening and seeing, that includes social relationship as a moving element of the internal composition of the piece. Recent choirs have been comprised of femme/women/nonbinary participants. Yelling Choir shares the immediate, visceral experience of having a voice (both sonically and creatively), especially for those who have historically had less of a voice in our culture. We love to yell—and we also explore other sounds, extended vocal techniques, movement, and improvisation. We explore getting big, taking up space, allowing a full spectrum of emotions—from joy to rage to boredom to delight, and everything in between—in an emotionally-regulated and supported way.

A dedicated educator, Johnaye serves as Professor of Music at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.

A muscular contemporary coming-of-age story, "The Wolves" offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of a high school girls’ indoor soccer team. Set against the AstroTurf backdrop of the team’s winter season, the play explores thorny and shifting landscapes of identity, friendship, competition, and belonging. With a powerful blend of humor and vulnerability, the play asks its audience to encounter the ferocious reality of growing up.

JAZZ GIRLS DAY invites and inspires girls for a day filled with learning, playing, and performing. One of the goals of the day is to help girls prepare for their All-State jazz auditions, although this is not a requirement to attend. Indulge in the elegance, romance, and comedic brilliance of Franz Lehar’s lighthearted operetta, “The Merry Widow” with an unexpected twist. Count Danilo and Hannah fall in love, but their marriage is thwarted by his uncle because of Hannah’s insufficient wealth. Instead, Hannah marries a wealthy older man who soon dies, leaving her all his fortune. The country is suffering financially, so the Baron and his wife host a party for the widowed Hannah – part of a scheme to find her a husband amongst her compatriots to keep her wealth in the country. Danilo feigns disinterest for fear his heart will be broken yet again. This flirtatious and humorous love story is woven together with energetic dance sequences and infectious tunes sung in English, and accompanied live by the PSU Orchestra.

The Northwest Percussion Festival was founded to give classical percussion ensembles from around the Northwest region a chance to perform for one another and exchange repertoire ideas. The state legislature made little effort to support the arts and culture in the past session, but is about to take up major arts legislation again in February. Portland has pulled out of the Regional Arts and Culture Council, shaking up the structure for providing support to arts and culture in the metropolitan area. A major arts and cultural plan for the region is about to be released. City leaders are talking about how the arts can be used to help revitalize downtown Portland.

Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington is a cultural giant and a musical pioneer who passed away 50 years ago in 1974. Yet his influence remains pervasive, fresh and ceaselessly modern. But why, and how? How many appreciate that he not only created the music that defined (and even named) the Swing era, but that he elevated Black American music to the level of high art without sacrificing its roots? How many understand that he created a career formula for artistic and economic freedom, or that behind his tailored suits and sophistication, he was true revolutionary, using music to push for social justice and equality? In an era when being a musician was one of the few ways an African American artist could achieve self-determination, Ellington’s entire career was a struggle for civil rights and personal respect. With a generous offering of music, videos and images, this lecture by historian and journalist Ashley Kahn will both examine and question Ellington's legend, to truly grasp the enduring stature of Edward "Duke" Ellington.

Sherry Alves and Christopher Woitach share a musical bond that is the result of twenty years of collaboration. Together, the duo explores jazz and popular song with open interpretation at every turn that brings unpredictability and playfulness to every performance. Woitach has been playing jazz guitar in the Portland area for decades and contributes his unique and varied approach to orchestration to the musical pairing.

Join PSU faculty, baritone Harry Baechtel and pianist Chuck Dillard, for a multimedia performance of Franz Schubert's late, tragic masterpiece Winterreise, performed in its entirety. This program offers students an immersive learning experience in the global city of London. The two seminars offered over the four-week program use London as a class text, as students explore topics including the history of science and urban health, as well as the city as a "contact zone" where representations of identity are negotiated through theater, literature, and the museums and streets of the city. Student learning is enhanced through trips to see London theater and through an overnight trip to the medieval city of York, as well as excursions within London.

Please join us for a 90-minute walking tour of the creative heart of Portland State University, including Shattuck Hall, Fariborz Maseeh Hall and the Art Building. In these buildings, you'll see the architecture and art studios, maker spaces, digital labs and classrooms where the students and faculty in the Schools of Architecture and Art + Design create and thrive. This tour is geared toward prospective and admitted visual arts, graphic design, art history, architecture and public interest design students and their families but is open to anyone who is curious about our programs.

Join this session to learn more about this summer study abroad program designed for students who want to immerse themselves in cinema studies in Ireland. Students in this 5-week program will get to work both critically and creatively, taking a course on contemporary Irish cinema and digital filmmaking all while earning 8 credits! All majors are welcome. The program will be led by UO Associate Professor Michael Aronson.

No composition kindles the warmth of the holiday season like Handel’s Messiah. Bringing to life the theatrical splendor that’s made Messiah an audience favorite for 300 years, the Portland State University Chamber Choir and a quartet of astounding soloists join your Oregon Symphony for Handel’s meditation on faith, hope, and redemption.

The game's afoot! A giant is dead, and his body lies at the base of a great beanstalk. The police believe young Jack is responsible. But the boy insists that he's innocent, and begs the help of the great detective Sherlock Holmes and his colleague, Dr. Watson. Can they untangle this magical mystery?

Seaborne (by Emmy-award winner composer Garth Neustadter) features coordination with live film projection, and for this piece, we're featuring graduate collaborative pianist Charlie Copeland and undergraduate pianist AJ Allida. "Above" is the first movement of a three-movement work, which was premiered by The Percussion Collective. Log Cabin Blues is a ragtime xylophone work by George Hamilton Green featuring percussion major Andrés Pinzón as xylophone soloist. Double Drum Dutch is a recently-composed work by Ayanna Woods, and was commissioned and premiered by Chicago's GRAMMY-winning ensemble Third Coast Percussion. Lastly, Kangaroopak Sardha by Terry Longshore will feature the entire ensemble and is based on both North and South Indian traditional forms and rhythms.

The PSU Orchestra premieres a serenade for strings, composed in 2021 by retired PSU professor Bryan Johanson. Pianist Julia Lee joins the orchestra for Mozart's iconic D Minor Concerto.

Join us for an open workshop on a natural approach to string playing that incorporates elements of the Alexander Technique. The workshop is presented by Tomás Cotik, violin professor at Portland State University and a renowned expert in mindful, efficient movement. Cotik will explore how to reduce tension and improve sound quality in your playing. This session is ideal for string players at any level who want to enhance their technique and musical expression.
