Lester Centre of the Arts

Prince Rupert, BC, Canada

### Lester Centre of the Arts The Lester Centre of the Arts is a cornerstone of cultural life in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Officially opened on May 9, 1987, it is situated at the base of Hays Mountain and is one of the first landmarks visible when entering the town. The center was primarily financed by the City of Prince Rupert, with significant contributions from the local community and the government of British Columbia, adhering to an original budget of 3.5 million dollars. Originally named Prince Rupert's Performing Arts Centre, the facility was led to fruition by Dr. William Hick and his dedicated committee, ensuring its completion within the projected timeframe and budget. In 2006, in recognition of the unwavering support from Peter and Mary Lester for the performing arts, the center was renamed to the Lester Centre of the Arts. Despite the name change, many locals continue to affectionately refer to it as the PAC, a nod to its original name. The Lester Centre of the Arts is a versatile venue capable of hosting a wide array of events, including theatrical performances, weddings, convocations, town-hall meetings, rock concerts, and conferences. The theater boasts a seating capacity for 702 patrons and is complemented by a large lobby, two concession stands, four changing rooms, a green room, and a rehearsal room. The center is a hub of activity, staging hundreds of events each year, which are supported by the tireless efforts of numerous volunteers. These events attract tens of thousands of audience members annually, who leave with lasting memories and smiles on their faces. The facility is owned by the City of Prince Rupert and operated by the Prince Rupert Performing Arts Centre Society. The Society is governed by a Board of Directors responsible for setting strategic direction and governance. The day-to-day operations are managed by a team of dedicated employees. The organizational values emphasize sustainability, respect, honesty, and a commitment to leaving audiences wanting more. The Board of Directors includes President Crystal Lorette, Vice-President Amy Dopson, Secretary-Treasurer Toni Carlson, and members Nick Adey, Steve Barre, Janet Beil, Kristy Maier, Georgia Riddell, and David Tran. The employee team is led by General Manager Chris Armstrong, with Dwain Harrison serving as Technical Director and Anthony Dalzell as Theatre Assistant. In addition to its role as a performance space, the Lester Centre of the Arts also offers memberships to the public. For a nominal fee, members receive various benefits, including voting rights at the Society's annual general meetings, a free 35th-anniversary t-shirt, priority booking for non-Lester Centre presentations, participation in local business prize draws, and complimentary coffee and tea at events. The Lester Centre of the Arts stands as a jewel of Northern B.C., connecting the community with a space to enjoy live events in a beautiful setting. It continues to enrich the cultural landscape of Prince Rupert, fostering the performing arts and bringing people together through shared experiences.
