This matinee performance concludes the Vienna Philharmonic and conductor Riccardo Muti’s back-to-back concerts at Carnegie Hall. They perform the last—and grandest—of Mozart’s symphonies: No. 41, “Jupiter,” a culmination of the composer’s mastery of Classical music conventions. It is also, as far as we know today, an extremely rare piece written of Mozart’s own accord, with no paid commission connected to or influencing it. The program also features Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” One of the classical canon’s most beloved works, it received its premiere here at Carnegie Hall with the composer himself in attendance.

Every year since 1971, Riccardo Muti has guest conducted the Vienna Philharmonic, with countless iconic performances that include the New Year’s Eve concerts, Salzburg Festival, and more. The celebrated partnership now returns to the Hall in this first of three consecutive programs. The evening opens with Schubert’s Fourth Symphony, “Tragic,” an emotionally charged staple that borrows freely from Haydn and Mozart. Audiences are then treated to a Bruckner symphony—always a notable event in the hands of the Vienna Philharmonic, an ensemble that boasts a remarkably close and storied relationship with the composer.

The performance will open with Alban Berg’s Three Pieces for Orchestra, and includes Bruckner’s visionary and transcendent Ninth Symphony—the last symphony on which he worked in 1912.

The Vienna Philharmonic makes their long overdue Kravis Center debut. Appearing annually at Carnegie Hall, the orchestra has performed only in one other city in Florida! Widely considered the finest and most important orchestra in the world, Vienna Philharmonic will be joined by guest conductor, Franz Welser-Möst—who enjoys a particularly close and productive artistic partnership with the Vienna Philharmonic, regularly conducting the orchestra at home and on tour. Their performance will open with Alban Berg’s Three Pieces for Orchestra, and includes Mahler’s epic Ninth Symphony, the last he completed, which the Vienna Philharmonic premiered in 1912.

Led by Franz Welser-Möst, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Artis—Naples for a pair of momentous performances in Hayes Hall. This first program includes works by Hindemith, Strauss, Schönberg and Ravel. The second program features Mahler’s colossal Ninth Symphony, the final — and arguably the most significant — completed symphony of the composer’s career.

Conductor Franz Welser-Möst calls Symphony No. 9—Mahler’s final completed symphony—“the strongest, most impactful farewell ever written in music.” The Vienna Philharmonic has an incomparable history with this transcendent work, and to hear the ensemble play it in an acoustically superior concert hall is an essential experience for music lovers. Even for Welser-Möst, to perform it with the philharmonic is “a very special experience.”

Experience the Vienna Philharmonic’s breathtaking range of color. The concert opens with Hindemith’s first composition for wind ensemble, which in 1926 helped establish him as one of Germany’s leading post-war composers. It is followed by the single-movement symphonic fantasy that Richard Strauss crafted from the “best parts” of his 1919 opera Die Frau ohne Schatten. In Schoenberg’s first 12-tone orchestral work—one of his most approachable—the composer showcases what Franz Welser-Möst calls “a new way of writing music in a purely musical way … without any influences from outside music.” The program closes with Ravel’s La Valse, a remarkably orchestrated work whose extra-musical significance is passionately debated.

Franz Welser-Möst leads the Vienna Philharmonic in symphonic works written during a period of astonishing transformation. While rooted solidly in the emotional sweep and architectural brilliance of late Romanticism, these works by Bruckner and Berg offer a glimpse into a new world of orchestral possibilities both awesome and frightening in their vastness. “Alban Berg, who, for me, is maybe the greatest genius of the [Second Viennese School], knew exactly when to break the rules, like Mozart did, for the impact it should make on the audience,” says Welser-Möst.

A not-to-be-missed season highlight! The legendary Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Zellerbach Hall with longtime collaborator Christian Thielemann at the podium. Over the course of three thrilling programs, the orchestra traverses a century of canonic repertoire—from the heroic music of Viennese classicism, through several generations of opulent Austro-German Romanticism, to the expanded sonorities of the Second Viennese School near the turn of the 20th century. These works showcase the mighty Vienna musicians at their finest, artists renowned for playing both “rich in detail and fearsome in its intensity” (The Guardian).

The first program features two evocative orchestral tone poems, matching the chromaticism of Schoenberg’s emotionally saturated Transfigured Night with Strauss’ massive and exhilarating An Alpine Symphony, a symphonic masterwork depicting a day-long trek through the mountains. The second program features Brahms’ serene and supremely lyrical Second Symphony, introduced by two effusive works inspired by the sea: Debussy’s technicolor triptych La mer and Mendelssohn’s overture The Hebrides, which was inspired by Scotland’s rugged coastal landscapes. The orchestra unleashes its full power in its final Berkeley concert, when it tackles Bruckner’s massive and magisterial Eighth Symphony, a work both orchestra and conductor recently recorded as part of an ongoing cycle of the composer’s music. “Provenance matters here. It helps if the orchestra has the music in its DNA. [Bruckner]…draws from Thielemann and the Vienna Philharmonic music-making of the rarest pedigree” (Gramophone).
