Now Hear This presents Lucy Conroy, a native Iowan with 15 years of live performance experience. Conroy has a wide range of disciplines including classical cello, local musical theatre, and contemporary vocals. Most recently, she can be found on the stage at Theatre Cedar Rapids or playing supporting non-traditional cello for local performances such as Music in the Courtyard at Brucemore or with Prince Wonten at CSPS. Lucy also has experience in studio recordings and is featured on records such as “Garden House” and “What a Gorgeous Day” by Treesreach and “Worse Things Happen at Sea” by Jake Stack.

Now Hear This is Lucy’s first solo performance and producing experience. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of genres including country, jazz, and pop, this performance is sure to leave audiences feeling as if they know Lucy Conroy personally.

Randy Bachman has become a legendary figure in the rock and roll world through his talents as a guitarist, songwriter, performer and producer. Bachman has earned over 120 gold and platinum album/singles awards around the world. His songwriting has garnered him the coveted #1 spot on radio playlists in over 20 countries and over the course of his career he has sold over 40 million records. Randy’s songs have been recorded by a broad range of artists and have been placed in dozens of TV shows, films and commercials. Impressively, his music has provided a veritable soundtrack for more than fifty years of popular music.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive

Kitty Steadman, the lead singer and co-founder of the successful and nationally touring act Drop Dead Dangerous has music in her soul and gypsy in her blood. Steadman has been playing guitar since the age of fourteen and is one of those special performers that can sing a rebel song with an angel’s voice and pull it off. Before writing or co-writing almost all of the songs Drop Dead Dangerous has put out, (amounting to three albums) Kitty released her very first EP Free To Roam in 2015. Now a seasoned professional, Steadman is stepping out on her own with the release of her first full length album Truck Driver’s Daughter. Catch Kitty touring both, on her own and with her projects.

Amber Hansen brings her 2025 concert, “Millennial Songbook”, to Opus Concert Cafe this June. This singer-songwriter style concert captures the voice of the millennial generation through a genre-blending journey—from country and bluegrass to rock, pop, and musical theater. Including some original songs as well as fresh takes on modern hits, this show presents the diverse sounds and stories of millennials with heart, humor, and harmony.

Rock ‘n’ roll is often hard to define, or even to find, in these fractured musical times. But to paraphrase an old saying, you know it when you hear it. And you always hear it with the Wallflowers. For the past 30 years, the Jakob Dylan-led act has stood as one of rock’s most dynamic and purposeful bands – a unit dedicated to and continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack. That signature style has been present through the decades, baked into the grooves of smash hits like 1996’s Bringing Down the Horse as well as more recent and exploratory fare like 2012’s Glad All Over.

Hear the story of Tchaikovsky’s arrival in New York for the grand opening of Carnegie Hall. Based on actual historical events, this poignant meeting of old-world influences and new-world experiences is a tale of contrast and courage. Music is woven into the drama with actors and the symphony on stage, performing familiar excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s most famous works.

In his Symphony No. 5, Mendelssohn musically reconciles his Jewish heritage with his love for Bach, using hymns to create an impassioned tribute to the Protestant Reformation. Mozart’s Requiem mass asks an all-powerful God to accept a human soul into heaven. Written in the final days of the composer’s brief life, this deeply moving choral work showcases Mozart at his finest.

A Solemn Devotional

A modern take on the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale! Featuring five Orchestra Iowa instrumentalists and five Cedar Rapids Opera vocalists, Song of the Nightingale evokes the sweet sounds of the nightingale. With music by composer Lisa DeSpain, this cheerful story comes alive in a fantastical and jubilant spectacle. Song of the Nightingale is approximately one hour in length and is ideal for audiences of all ages.

Continuing along the Silk Road, Orchestra Iowa’s Principal Cellist, Philip Bergman, performs Tan Dun’s evocative Crouching Tiger Concerto. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition wraps up the musical journey with its infamous booming fanfare at the Great Gate of Kiev.

A Tale of Two Cultures

The season opens on a high note with two inspired takes on Gershwin. Stewart Goodyear plays the classic Rhapsody in Blue, followed by jazzy variations on I’ve Got Rhythm performed by The Menefield/Phillips Quartet. Symphony No.1 by Black composer William Grant Still blends classical symphonic form with spirituals, blues, and jazz. This landmark composition influenced Gershwin, who in turn inspired Bernstein.

Amongst the most famous masterpieces for chorus and orchestra is Orff’s epic Carmina Burana.  Estelí Gomez (soprano), Ben Gulley (tenor), Norman Garrett (baritone), and our own symphonic chorus join the full symphony to stage this commanding work. Paired with Barber’s Symphony No. 1, featuring cycling themes that wax and wane through darkness and light, this concert will be a riveting experience you will not soon forget!

Carmina Burana

After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is discovered and befriended by a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas). Bringing the extraterrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces E.T., as the alien is dubbed, to his brother and his little sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and the children decide to keep its existence a secret. Soon, however, E.T. falls ill, resulting in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.

We’re kicking off our Masterworks series with a celebration of America 250. The dramatic and stirring Fanfare for the Common Man by American composer Aaron Copland opens the program in recognition of the contributions of the average, everyday people. Next, GRAMMY Award winning pianist Michelle Cann delights us with George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F. Finally, we’re traveling to the new world with a piece that was finished here in Iowa, Dvorak’s New World Symphony.

Accidentally conjured on Halloween night in modern-day Salem, three seventeenth- century witches known as the Sanderson sisters, plot to steal the life essence from the town’s children to ensure their own eternal life. The diabolical sisters are comically outwitted by three prankster kids and aided by Thackery Binx, a boy transformed into a cat centuries earlier for interfering with the witches. Released on July 16, 1993, and directed by Kenny Ortega, the spooky comedy stars Bette Midler (Winifred), Sarah Jessica Parker (Sarah), Kathy Najimy (Mary), Omri Katz (Max), Thora Birch (Dani), and Vinessa Shaw (Allison).

We’re bringing extreme sports to orchestral music. In a rarely performed feat of musical endurance, Stewart Goodyear returns to Orchestra Iowa to play ALL FIVE Beethoven Piano Concertos over two nights. You’ll hear the evolution of Beethoven’s musical style, from his first concerto to his last.

Their brand of holiday music runs the gamut from toe-tapping and hand-clapping to nostalgic and sentimental, with just a touch of comedy thrown in for fun. This year we are so excited to present Lynne with some terrific old pals – Gerard Estella, Dave Ollinger, Greg Kanz, Marc Janssen and Keel Clemmens. Lynne’s holiday show has been a mainstay in Eastern Iowa for 23 years and is not to be missed. Note that a Sunday matinee performance has been added this year.

We’re painting a picture with sound under the baton of Guest Conductor and University of Iowa Alum, Fernanda Lastra. Starting out with George Whitefield Chadwick’s Jubilee Overture, who’s accompanying poem begins by loudly stating “No cool gray tones for me!” Then, in homage to Lastra’s Argentinian roots, Luis Gianneo’s Le Tarco en Flor captures the essence of the vibrant purple blooms of the Jacaranda tree. Orchestra Iowa’s own Principal Clarinet, Christine Bellomy, brings the dark emotions and rhythms of Oscar Navarro’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1 to life before we end the program with the ironically happy melodies of Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.

We’re heading to outer space, no spacesuits required. This musical journey through space starts on earth with Ravel’s ballet turned orchestral concert, Daphnis et Chloé. Then, our spacewalk really begins with Holst’s masterpiece, The Planets. From Mercury to Neptune, our final Masterworks concert of the season is going to be out of this world.
