The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra (DSO), located in Dubuque, Iowa, traces its origins to 1903 but was formally established in 1957 under the University of Dubuque's auspices. Initially named the University Civic Orchestra, it was rebranded as the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra in 1963 when the university relinquished its governing rights. The DSO's first concert was held on December 11, 1957, conducted by Dr. Parvis Mahmoud, who led the orchestra until 1985. Under Mahmoud's leadership, the orchestra expanded in size and reputation. Nicholas Palmer succeeded Mahmoud in 1986, further increasing the orchestra's performances and public support. In 1999, William Intriligator became the third Music Director and Conductor, under whose guidance the DSO has seen significant growth, including the addition of opera productions and increased educational outreach. The DSO's mission is to engage the tri-state community through live musical performances and educational programs, envisioning itself as an indispensable cultural treasure.
