Des Moines Gamer Symphony Orchestra

Des Moines, IA, United States

The Des Moines Gamer Symphony Orchestra (DSMGSO) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on performing video game music. Founded by Aaron Barker in 2019, the ensemble aims to elevate video game music and foster lifelong musical engagement through free concerts. The orchestra's inaugural performance took place in June 2019, featuring themes from Mario, Sonic, and Zelda, attracting over 225 attendees. Under the direction of Akira Mori, the orchestra continued to grow, performing to larger audiences, including a 2021 concert at the Jamie Hurd Amphitheater with 475 attendees. The pandemic prompted virtual performances and the establishment of a formal board, leading to the organization's nonprofit designation. In 2022, the DSMGSO expanded its repertoire, performing at the Iowa Esports Championship and collaborating with the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra for a concert attended by over 1,000 people. The organization is committed to making each concert more exciting and inspiring, showcasing the majesty of video game music.
