==Mill Valley Philharmonic== Mill Valley Philharmonic (MVP) is a community-based orchestra located in Marin County, California, with a mission to enrich the cultural life of the region by providing access to quality orchestral programs for people of all ages and means. Established in the fall of 2000 by Laurie Cohen, MVP has grown from a modest group of 15 string players to a full orchestra comprising 60 auditioned, volunteer musicians. ===Mission and Vision=== MVP is committed to making music an integral part of community life, believing that it has the power to engage the imagination, evoke aesthetic appreciation, and inspire creative expression. The organization strives to ensure that its concerts are accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation, and emphasizes the importance of intimate performance venues that foster a connection between the musicians and the audience. The programming of MVP is noted for its innovation and thematic approach, which includes a range of recognized masterpieces and world premieres. MVP has commissioned and presented over 20 new works by emerging composers. Education and outreach are also central to MVP's mission, with efforts to cultivate a new generation of classical music enthusiasts through educational initiatives in local schools and informative talks at performances. ===History=== Founded by Laurie Cohen, MVP quickly expanded its reach and now performs for more than 3,500 people each season across various venues in Marin County and the Bay Area. The orchestra has a history of engaging with the community through collaborations with other non-profits, diverse cultural groups, and local artists. MVP has also been recognized for its creative programming, which has included thematic concert series that explore connections between music and other cultural and historical elements. ===Artistic Leadership=== Dana Sadava currently serves as the Artistic Director and Conductor of Mill Valley Philharmonic. Sadava, who holds a Masters degree in conducting from the University of Michigan, brings a wealth of experience from both the operatic and symphonic realms. She is also involved in music education, serving on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and directing chamber music at The Urban School. Laurie Cohen, the founder of MVP, served as the conductor from its inception until 2018 and has been recognized with several awards for her contributions to the community. ===Board and Staff=== The MVP is governed by a Board of Directors composed of dedicated individuals from various professional backgrounds, many of whom are also musicians within the orchestra. The board includes legal professionals, educators, business executives, and medical practitioners, all united by their passion for music and community service. ===Support and Membership=== As a volunteer organization, MVP relies on the support of its community through donations, volunteering, and business partnerships. The organization encourages local musicians to become members of the orchestra, offering them the chance to rehearse and perform at a high level. ===Outreach and Events=== In addition to its regular concert series, MVP hosts special events such as educational sessions about famous composers like Mozart, providing insights into their lives, works, and historical significance. These events are often free and aim to engage the broader community in the appreciation of classical music. MVP continues to serve as Marin County's premiere volunteer orchestra, fostering a deep connection between music and community, and remaining a vibrant and integral part of the cultural landscape of the region.
