Coggon Opera House

Coggon, IA, United States

==Coggon Opera House== The '''Coggon Opera House''' is a historic cultural venue located in Coggon, Iowa. It has served as a hub for community gatherings and cultural programs since its inception. The Opera House was first established in 1915, following a successful fundraising campaign by local businessmen who raised $18,000 for its construction. The vision was to create a space that could host all public meetings and events in the area. The Coggon Opera House Company, with A. W. Savage as President and N. B. Richardson as Secretary, oversaw the erection of the 60 by 100-foot brick structure on Main Street. Dr. G. M. Kendall took on the role of Manager and Secretary after the opening. ===Grand Opening and Early Years=== The grand opening of the Opera House took place on February 8, 1915, with a program by Hyperion Lodge of the Knights of Pythias from Manchester, Iowa, followed by a dance. The venue quickly became a central location for a variety of activities, including plays, high school commencements, basket socials, dances, and silent films. During World War I, it hosted Red Cross fundraisers to support the war effort. The Opera House also served as a basketball court for local games and was a popular spot for showing silent films several nights a week. ===The Comet Theater=== As movie theaters gained popularity, the Coggon Opera House adapted by adding a large screen and projection booth, becoming known as the Comet Theater. A naming contest led to its new moniker, and the venue continued to attract audiences with features like Bank Nights and the distribution of dishes as prizes. However, with the advent of television, attendance declined, and the Comet Theater closed its doors in 1982. ===Renovation and Community Arts Council=== In 1989, the Old Opera House Community Arts Council was formed with the goal of restoring the Opera House. The council was incorporated as a non-profit organization, and the Coggon Improvement Company deeded the building to the council. Renovation efforts began in 1990, with community volunteers contributing to the clean-up and refurbishment of the venue. Adam Mangold's Eagle Scout Award community service project was dedicated to the Opera House's renovation, which culminated in a Grand Reopening Variety Show on September 18, 1993. The Coggon Opera House today continues to be a cherished institution in the community, hosting a variety of events and performances. It has received positive reviews from patrons who have enjoyed the shows and the atmosphere of this historic venue. The Opera House stands as a testament to the dedication and spirit of the Coggon community, preserving a rich heritage of arts and culture for future generations. ==Contact Information== '''Coggon Opera House''' 209 E Main St Coggon, Iowa 52218 Phone: 319-435-2071 Email: [email protected]
