About TheatreUNI TheatreUNI, the production arm of the University of Northern Iowa's Department of Theatre, has established itself as a prominent entity in the realm of academic theatre production. With a rich history that traces back to its earliest productions in 1878, TheatreUNI has been an integral part of the university's cultural fabric for well over a century. Annually, TheatreUNI stages four to six main stage productions, offering a diverse range of theatrical experiences to the university community and the public. These productions are complemented by a variety of special events, such as design presentations and guest artist lectures, which further enrich the cultural offerings of the department. While some events are free of charge, others are available at a reasonable ticket price, with all main stage productions during the academic year being free for UNI students. TheatreUNI operates out of the Strayer-Wood Theatre, a dynamic and fully-equipped theatre building located on the University of Northern Iowa campus. This facility boasts two performance spaces: the Strayer-Wood Theatre and the Bertha Martin Theatre. These venues are supported by a range of specialized spaces designed to facilitate the production process, including the Phelps Acting Practice Room/Light Lab, scenic and costume studios, a graphics room, design development and computer labs, a large makeup room, two dressing rooms, a Greenroom, a library, and a ticket office. The mission of the Department of Theatre at TheatreUNI is multifaceted. It aims to produce theatre that not only excites but also sheds light on the human condition in ways that resonate with students, audiences, community members, educators, and guest artists. The department's commitment to diversity, creativity, and participation is evident in both its coursework and productions. TheatreUNI serves a dual purpose: it prepares students for professional careers in theatre and also cultivates an appreciation for theatre among those who may not pursue it as a career but recognize its value in enriching their lives. The Strayer-Wood Theatre is dedicated to fostering student creation and participation, nurturing the university community, and entertaining the Cedar Valley region. Productions at Strayer-Wood Theatre are known for being innovative and captivating, embodying the essence of real theatre. In summary, TheatreUNI is a cornerstone of the University of Northern Iowa's commitment to the arts, providing invaluable educational experiences and cultural enrichment through its diverse range of productions and educational programs.
