Pianist Michelle Cann made her orchestral debut at the age of 14 and has since performed as soloist with prominent orchestras, including the Atlanta, Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestras. She’s an advocate of the music of Florence Price and has performed her solo and chamber music works throughout the United States. She teaches at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she was named the inaugural Eleanor Sokoloff Chair in Piano Studies, and is presented in collaboration with the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra and Halekulani.

Maestro Kala Ramnath with her ‘Singing Violin’ stands among the world’s finest, most inspirational instrumentalists. In May 2017 she was awarded the illustrious Sangeet Natak Academy Puraskar for her contributions to the violin in Hindustani Classical Music.

Be part of the trio’s 25th anniversary celebration of performing on the international stage. This fusion of two overlapping musical pairs consists of Korean-born sisters, violinist Soo-Jin Hong and cellist Soo-Kyung Hong, along with Soo-Kyung’s husband, Danish pianist Jens Elvekjaer. Recognized as one of the world’s finest piano trios, the Trio has performed regularly at venues including Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Concertgebouw. This is the trio’s third performance for HCMS and they will present a special anniversary program that reflects their versatile repertoire and history.

Minyoung Lee (이민영) performs a recital of traditional and modern works for geomungo. In addition to a court music work and a sanjo, Ms. Lee will perform “Chulgang (철강)”, a work by North Korean composer Yong-sil Kim (김용실), which was inspired by the masses who toiled at Heungnam Smelter in the mid-20th century.

The University of Hawaiʻi Contemporary Music Ensemble (Thomas Osborne, director) presents a concert featuring the music of composers from New Zealand. The program includes two works by Salina Fisher: Lumina, a piece inspired by bioluminescent glowworms, and Kintsugi, based on the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. Gemma Peacocke is represented twice on the program as well, with Death Wish for four percussionists and A Memory for soprano and chamber ensemble. Also on the program is Dylan Lardelli’s Two Bells, inspired by the Japanese dance-drama Noh and Gareth Farr’s percussion quartet inspired by Rarotongan log drumming, Little Sea Gongs.

KI MIDIYANTO is a musician and dhalang (puppet master) from Wonogiri, Central Java, coming from a family of artists. For over thirty years he has taught and performed extensively in Java, the U.S., Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada, including ten years in Portland as the gamelan director at Lewis & Clark College, where he earned an MA. He has been featured in several documentary films and directed the gamelan for the CD Shadow Music of Java, recorded at the Smithsonian. He has taught and directed gamelan at UC Berkeley since 2004, after an earlier stint from 1988 to 1992.
