HarpFusion Presents Star Maps: A nod to HarpFusion’s 2007 Cosmos concert, this riveting harp ensemble performance features planetary, space, and night sky themes, sprinkled with a bit of astrology! HarpFusion members will perform Star Maps, a new work by composer Michael Vince. Star Maps is a collection of twelve short pieces, each inspired by a different symbol of the astrological zodiac chart. Space-themed student arrangements will take center stage in the second half of the concert featuring music by Van Morrison, Electric President, Belle and Sebastian, among others. Join us for a cosmic afternoon of harp music!

Mo Casorla, Oboe – Senior Recital

UA Symphonic Choir will present the first performance of Marianna Martines’s Terza Messa since its premiere during her lifetime in 1761. Together with a chamber orchestra, the choir will be joined by soloists to present this work by the exceptional Viennese Classical composer, who was a contemporary of Joseph Haydn and W.A. Mozart, and who was highly acclaimed during her lifetime. The performance will be based on the first published edition of this work that was created in 2023 by UA doctoral student James Higgs. James traveled to Vienna to gain access to archival materials including a manuscript of this work to create his edition, and this performance will be the American premiere of the work. The first recording of this work will be made as part of the preparation for this concert, and both the score and recording will be made available for purchase to the public in early May. The concert will begin with a short talk by editor James Higgs, who will introduce the composer and the work. The performance will be conducted by Dr. Elizabeth Schauer, Director of Choral Activities at University of Arizona. The event is free and open to the public, but a free will offering will be taken at the conclusion of the performance to offset costs associated with producing the performance and recording.

We welcome award winning composer Kevin Day to the University of Arizona School of Music as our composer in residence! Kevin Day is an internationally acclaimed composer, conductor, and jazz pianist currently based in San Diego, California. Mr. Day is the recipient of a MacDowell Fellowship for Music Composition, a winner of the BMI Composer Award, the TCU Alumni Outstanding Young Professional Award, a three-time ASCAP Morton Gould Finalist, a finalist for the ABA Sousa-Oswald Award, and a finalist for the NBA Revelli Award.

The two orchestras of the University of Arizona will share the Crowder Hall stage for their final performances of the 2023-24 season. The evening will cohere around two themes:  journey and homeland. The UArizona Philharmonic begins with Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture, inspired by two short works of the German Romantic poet, Goethe.  Smetana’s vivid and colorful depiction of the Moldau River, a symbol of Czech national pride, follows. We follow the river on its journey from the tiniest mountain trickle all the way downstream to a triumphant expanse of a broad river. After the intermission, the Arizona Symphony offers Symphony No. 2 by the Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius. In this masterpiece many hear a call to Finns’ ethnic independence and national pride, in response to Russia’s imperial threat. The symphony is a symbolic journey from bucolic innocence through conflict and struggle to assert a national identity, culminating in a broad, triumphant statement of Finnish national pride.

This event brings together composition, performance and scholarship at the University of Arizona to feature the world premiere of THE ODYSSEY OF PRIMORDIAL COSMIC, a new work by composer Yuyao Shangguan. This première takes place as the final meeting of the course MUS 130B (Introduction to Music Literature). Throughout the semester, students in the course have explored five world premières across music history by Monteverdi, Handel, Beethoven, Belioz, and Stravinsky.

UA University Singers and University Community Chorus are partnering with Alfie Norville Gem and Mineral Museum for an immersive concert experience. UCC has commissioned a multi-movement work from Tucson-based composer, Joshua Keeling. This work for mixed-voice and percussion ensemble shares the personal stories of mine workers in search of hidden treasures. University Singers will present music connected to gems and minerals commonly found in Arizona: wulfenite, silver, malachite, gold, and turquoise. Born in Taiwan, Allison Wang is a professional pianist who’s won numerous awards and honors including: Silver Prize Winners of Paris Music Competition 2019, 1st Prize Winners of American Protege International Competition 2018, chosen participant for Gilmore Keyboard Festival 2018, first prize winner of Cremona International Music Academy String & Piano Competition, winner of the 2017 American Opera Society of Chicago Scholarship, winner of the 2016 Jerome and Elaine Nerenberg Foundation Scholarships. Allison has performed internationally including Carnegie Hall in NYC, Chicago, Finland, Italy, Austria and Taiwan. Alumnus Andrea Roberto has gracefully agreed to delight us with a free concert during his upcoming visit to Arizona. Andrea is a unique rising star in the classical guitar scene, and will play instead of polish virtuoso Marcin Dylla who was unable to travel for unforseen circumstances out of his control.

Amelia Tataronis (Rieman) was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on November 26, 1906. An excellent student who loved to read, play the piano and sing, Amelia eventually became the co-valedictorian of her high school class and was given the highest award for her music activities. As a teenager she eventually secured a position accompanying a dance and exercise class at the YMCA, in order to save money for college. Here it was that a local doctor, who enjoyed the aerobics class befriended Amelia and, anonymously, paid for Amelia’s tuition at Radcliff College, where she had been accepted into the music program. Later in life, she discovered the name of her patron and endowed a scholarship at Harvard to honor this man. Amelia went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in 1929 and her master’s in 1932.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about our program through a Q&A session with our undergraduate and graduate students and meet the faculty and current students over dinner. The highlight of the evening will be the final round of the 14th Annual Michael Moore Piano Competition, featuring performances by accomplished undergraduate pianists currently studying at the University of Arizona. Mr. Sholin earned a BFA (1974) and an MFA (1978) in classical guitar from the California Institute of the Arts. He studied with teacher and musicologist Emilio Pujol in Cervera, Spain in 1972 and 1973 and played in a master class for Andres Segovia in 1973.

Originally from Houston, Texas, Mike began studying music formally at the Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, a school renowned for its musical alumni, which includes such luminaries as Jason Moran, Robert Glasper, Brian Michael Cox, Eric Harland, Chris Dave, Kendrick Scott, and Beyoncé.

Jazz Week Concert – UA Studio Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo featuring Mike Moreno

Associate Professor of Violin Timothy Kantor will present his final recital at the University of Arizona. He will be leaving Arizona to join the faculty of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Australia this fall. The recital opens with one of Mozart’s brilliant violin sonatas, the heart of which is a colossal D-minor theme and variations movement. This is followed by a lively quartet for violins performed with Adjunct Instructor and Tucson Symphony Associate Concertmaster Michelle Abraham Kantor and two of Professor Kantor’s extraordinarily accomplished former students. The program will conclude with Beethoven’s ultimate contribution to the violin sonata repertoire, a piece that in many ways concludes his heroic middle compositional period and alludes to some of the profound innovations of his latest works.

The University of Arizona Symphonic Choir, under the direction of Elizabeth Schauer, presents “The Rising,” a dynamic and eclectic program representing a range of compositional voices and musical traditions. Works of popular musicians Thomas A. Dorsey, Hozier and Enya are featured alongside the music of lesser known historical composers, including Undine Smith Moore, Salamone Rossi, Margarita Cozzolani and Francisco Feliciano. Symphonic Choir is one of only two Arizona choirs selected by audition to perform on the 2023 Western Region Conference of the American Choral Directors Association that will take place March 5 through 9 in Pasadena, California, and this concert is a preview of that performance. The Walden Grove High School Choir, under the direction of Luke Diamond, also will perform on the concert, singing works include Dodie Clark’s “Secret for the Mad.” This popular concert, hosted each year at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, is often packed. Early arrival is recommended for parking and to get a good seat. Doors will open at 2:15 pm.
