Stevens Point, WI, United States
The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra (CWSO), established in 1947, has evolved from a small group of musicians led by Peter Michelsen into a prominent symphonic ensemble in central Wisconsin. Initially formed outside the Central State Teacher's College (now UW-Stevens Point) activities, it was supported by local citizens and musicians who saw the value in a community-based orchestra. The first concert in 1948 marked the beginning of a tradition of musical excellence and community engagement. Over the decades, the CWSO has seen significant growth and development. By the 1950s, it was known as the Stevens Point Symphony, and under the leadership of various directors, including Dr. Hugo Marple, the orchestra expanded its repertoire and audience. The 1970s and 1980s brought professionalization with the involvement of university faculty and the move to the Sentry Theater, enhancing its public image and artistic quality. The tenure of Music Directors Donald E. Greene and Jon Borowicz in the late 20th century was marked by artistic growth and the stabilization of the orchestra's roster. The 1990s and early 2000s saw collaborations with notable soloists and composers, broadening the CWSO's artistic reach. Dr. Patrick Miles' leadership from 2002 to 2019 included guest soloists of international renown and innovative projects that engaged the community. Entering a new era under Dr. Andres Moran, the CWSO continues to be a vital part of central Wisconsin's cultural landscape, with a mission of providing high-quality musical performances and educational opportunities. The orchestra's journey reflects a commitment to artistic excellence and community involvement, making it a cherished institution in the region.
